Meet Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food

Stewart began making dog food nearly 45 years ago when it was still strange to use holistic ingredients. The company now has a range of freeze-dried raw foods that provide an excellent source of nutrition and give dogs the chance to improve health and well-being.

Raw foods are gaining traction in the dog food world, but it’s still a type of food many owners would like to feed but aren’t able to, as it can be inconvenient to prepare and store. Stewart’s mission is to make that process a whole lot easier for busy pet parents.

Let’s take a look at our comprehensive Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food Review below.

Behind the Brand

Stewart Foods was part of a movement of a group of dog food companies trying to right some of the ills of the dog food industry.

The company started creating dog foods with human-grade ingredients to help owners feed their dogs quality nutrition without cheap fillers or artificial ingredients.

Stewart is located in Dayton, Ohio, and uses only ingredients sourced from the United States, with the sole exception of lamb, which is sourced from New Zealand. The ingredients come from trusted providers who take high care of both the environment and their own production.

The company maintains a level 2 (Safe Quality Food Program) certified processing plant instead of farming out their production to a separate packing plant.

They create recipes designed to mimic your dog’s ancestral canine diet and build energy and lean muscles. They’re higher in protein and fat than many standard kibbles.

There’s a lot of evidence that good fats and proteins are critical for dogs to avoid injury, especially those who are highly active.

  • Lamb Heart
  • Lamb Liver
  • Ground Lamb Bone
  • Broccoli
WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food Review, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 9
This freeze-dried meal is made from premium ingredients, all nutrients, flavor and aroma locked in a heart-shaped, bite-sized kibbles.

Stewart Raw Naturals Lamb Freeze-Dried Recipe is a grain-free food suitable for dogs of all breeds, sizes, and life stages. This single-source protein food is great for dogs with allergies. It has premium, human-grade ingredients, and dense nutrients. The heart-shaped pieces can be served to dogs as meals straight out of the bag or moistened with warm water.

This dog food starts with fresh lamb meat which is a good novel protein for dogs allergic to chicken or beef. Lamb is considered a healthier meat alternative to beef, as they live in healthier environments, are free-range, and fed on pasture. Its meat is rich in vitamin B12 and B3. While it is usually fattier than beef, it is also higher in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. It is also rich in selenium and zinc.

This freeze-dried raw recipe also has lamb organs, as well as bones for calcium and phosphorus. Fruits and vegetables provide excellent sources of vitamins and minerals. Unlike many grain-free dog foods, this recipe is free from potatoes, peas, and legumes. Instead, it has superfoods such as broccoli, apples, carrots, cranberries, and many others.

Looking at the list of ingredients, it may seem that it is filled with too many plant-based ingredients. However, they all make up only 18% of this recipe. This dog food is 45% protein, and the bulk of its protein comes from high-quality animal ingredients.

Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food Review, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 10

Salmon oil provides a rich source of omega fatty acids that can support skin and coat health. It could also help reduce itching and ease digestion as your dog adapts to the new food.

Extra protein and fat are also good building blocks for muscle tone and could help prevent injuries in your active dog. Quite high in fat at 31%, Stewart Raw Naturals Lamb Recipe is highly recommended for puppies or very active dogs. Such high fat levels are not the best for dogs with pancreatitis or those who need more fiber in their diets.

The food isn’t cheap, but you may not have to feed as much per serving as you would those cheap kibbles. Talk to your vet about the protein and fat levels and how to adjust for your dog’s particular body composition. It could be a bit much for highly sedentary dogs.

As one of the brand’s highest-rated products, this recipe is a hit among picky dogs of all ages. Some say even their cat siblings want to eat this super meaty lamb recipe. This is not surprising at all as it is loaded with all of the rich flavors of lamb meat and fat.

Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food Review, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 11
A gluten and grain free formula with real chicken, chicken gizzards and chicken liver, plus it is enhanced with flaxseed meal and salmon oil for that lustrous and vibrant coat.

Stewart Raw Naturals Chicken Freeze-Dried Recipe is a grain-free food suitable for dogs of all breeds, sizes, and life stages. This freeze-dried raw recipe combines all the dense nutrition of raw food with the convenience of shelf-stable kibbles. Packed with chicken meat, organs, and bones, this food is high in protein and fat – a great choice for dogs who are working or highly active.

With fresh chicken as the most plentiful ingredient, this recipe offers highly digestible protein with flavors that have been popular among dogs for generations. At 40% protein, this recipe is ideal for active dogs. The essential amino acids in chicken help dogs build and maintain lean and strong muscles. Chicken is also high in B3 and B6 vitamins, phosphorus, and selenium. For strong bones and teeth, ground-up chicken bones are added as a source of calcium.

Chicken liver and gizzard are also included in this recipe. Both are packed with nutrients beneficial to dogs. They also provide rich flavors that dogs immensely enjoy.

Chicken liver is rich in vitamin A, which supports healthy vision among many other benefits. It also has vitamin B12 and iron to boost energy, plus vitamin C, folate, selenium, and copper. Chicken gizzard Gizzard is rich in cartilage, zinc, vitamin B12, and iron. It’s also a natural source of glucosamine, which helps support joint health.

While this recipe is high in fat at 20%, the main fat source is not too high up on the list of ingredients. Salmon oil takes the 11th spot in this recipe’s ingredient list. It is an excellent source of omega 3 fatty acids. These essential fatty acids help protect dogs’ hearts, promote brain development in puppies, improve skin and coat health, and reduce joint pain.

This chicken recipe also has nutritious vegetables and fruits as sources of carbs, fiber, and other nutrients. It has cantaloupe which is an excellent source of dietary fiber, vitamin B6, niacin, folate, vitamin A, vitamin C, and potassium.

This grain, gluten, pea, potato, and legume-free recipe has a total of 11 nutritious fruits and vegetables, each high in nutrients. The minimal processing allows the freeze-dried food raw food to retain much of its nutritional value.

It is also fortified with vitamin and mineral supplements to ensure a complete and balanced meal. This recipe can be served on its own, straight out of the bag, or moistened with some warm water.

Based on feedback from pet parents who bought this product, it seems to be a big hit among dogs. All of them said that their dogs love this recipe. The pups enjoy this freeze-dried food in many ways.

Some like it dry, while others prefer it rehydrated with a bit of warm water. Some pet parents give them as treats, others give them as meal toppers.

Many of them also commented that the food smelled good enough for humans to eat, which many take as an indication of high quality. One customer claims to have received a bag that has higher fat levels than what is stated on Chewy’s website.

It appears there may have been some changes made to the product’s guaranteed analysis. It is possible that you may receive a bag with the old guaranteed analysis or the new one. Other than the guaranteed analysis, there do not seem to be any changes in the ingredient list.

Overall, this is a very high-quality dog food. As with most high-quality products, this too can be quite pricey especially for owners of larger dogs or multiple dogs. Dogs can still get the benefits of raw nutrition by having the shelf-stable pieces as treats, snacks, or mixed with their meals.

Not all dogs can have such a meat and fat-rich regular diet. For less active dogs, a little can go a long way. Athlete pups and working dogs can reap the most benefits from a high-protein, high-fat dog food such as this. This type of food is one of the best ways to keep their energy needs sustained and to keep them healthy.

A multi-protein kibble which offers the best from both land and sea. Crafted using fresh chicken and salmon which are sourced locally with ample amounts of the required nutrients.

Stewart Raw Naturals Chicken & Salmon Recipe is a grain-free food suitable for dogs of all breeds, sizes, and life stages. This is a dual-protein recipe that combines two highly digestible protein sources that dogs love.

Chicken and salmon are both nutritious and packed with flavors that dogs naturally crave. This minimally processed dog food provides all the benefits of a raw diet in the form of heart-shaped freeze-dried pieces.

At 45% protein, a little goes a long way with this recipe. With real chicken as the first ingredient, this freeze-dried raw food is easy to digest even for sensitive tummies.

Chicken offers a lean protein source that is naturally high in omega 6 fatty acids that support skin and coat health. It also has glucosamine which promotes healthy joints in dogs.

Unlike the brand’s chicken recipe, this product does not contain chicken gizzard. However, it does have chicken liver, salmon, and egg as additional sources of protein and other nutrients.

Chicken liver is high in vitamin A, B12, C, as well as iron, folate, selenium, and copper. These vitamins and minerals support many aspects of dogs’ health such as immune system, eye, nerves, and muscle health.

Egg is highly digestible and has a full range of essential amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein. It has vitamin A, B12, riboflavin, folate, iron, selenium, and essential fatty acids. Just like chicken liver, eggs also add richness to this dog food.

Salmon is one of the best protein sources for dogs. Naturally flavorful and high in omega 3 fatty acids, this tasty fish helps dogs have healthy skin and lustrous coats. Salmon oil boosts the omega 3 levels in this recipe.

Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food Review, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 16

To help balance the omega 3 and 6 ratios, ground flaxseeds are also included in this Chicken & Salmon Recipe. Flaxseeds contain both types of fatty acids.

This superfood for pups can help promote a healthy heart function and may even help fight cancer. Its anti-inflammatory properties can help lower blood pressure, improve kidney function, and maintain healthy skin and glossy coats.

This grain, gluten, pea, potato, and legume-free recipe also has nutritious produce such as cranberries, blueberries, cantaloupe, dried kelp, and ginger among others. They are all high in antioxidants that help fight free radicals.

This freeze-dried recipe is fortified with vitamins and minerals to ensure complete and balanced nutrition with every meal. Like other recipes from the brand, this chicken and salmon recipe comes with a feeding guide with serving suggestions for different activity levels, ages, and weight. This food can be served to dogs as a meal, treat, or as a kibble-topper.

While feedback for this recipe has been mostly positive, one buyer stated that the feeding guide on the bag and the one on the brand’s website do not match. This can create confusion for pet parents who are new to this brand.

Other pet parents have been quite happy with the results that this food was able to deliver. They are happy to find a recipe that their picky pups love, and appreciate the high quality of its ingredients.

This freeze-dried kibble scores high marks for its quality, palatability, and overall buyer feedback. However, while small-batch preparations typically mean better quality, the conflicting information on the packaging and company website creates confusion and distrust among buyers.

Made with real turkey meat, organs, and ground bones from locally raised poultry in the Midwest USA, along with fruits and vegetables, this food serves a balanced diet that is great for maintaining weight and fitness for dogs.

Turkey meat is rich in nutrients like protein, riboflavin, and phosphorus. Riboflavin is beneficial to canines as it is responsible for fats and carbohydrates producing energy. It is also known to help produce the red blood cells that carry oxygen and nutrients around the dog's body.

The lack of vitamin A in dogs may result in night blindness, some studies suggest. vitamin C is an important antioxidant that hunts potentially harmful free radicals in the body and can help reduce inflammation and cognitive aging. Niacin and vitamin B12 help facilitate enzyme function, while vitamin B6 is responsible for glucose generation, hormone regulation, and nervous system function.

Pantothenic acid aids energy metabolism. Iron is directly involved in the formation of red blood cells, and hemoglobin, which carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body. Zinc and selenium are imperative for healthy skin and fur, good thyroid function, and a good immune system, while copper is necessary for normal skin and hair pigmentation.

Stewart Raw Naturals Dog Food Review, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 18

At 47% protein, this product is best for building lean and strong muscles in dogs. Ground turkey bones are added to supply calcium for healthy bones and teeth.

Although high in fat at 27%, its main source is not very high up on the list of ingredients. Ground flaxseed and salmon oil are nos. 10 and 12 respectively in the list, which are excellent natural omega fatty acids that can enhance overall vitality, healthy skin, and a shiny coat.

Flaxseeds are also rich in protein and contain anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce allergy symptoms and joint pain. Salmon oil is rich in omega 3 and 6 fatty acids that help promote a healthy heart, immune system, cognitive function, and skin and coat in dogs.

It also contains an ideal mixture of fruits and veggies for the much-needed carbohydrates and fiber. Apples are primary on that list and are notable for their vitamins A and C, fiber, calcium, and phosphorus content.

Next are carrots, lettuce, and watermelon, which are all a rich source of fiber and nutrients. Further down the list are other superfoods like blueberry, cranberry, kelp, ginger, parsley, and garlic that are known antioxidants.

It is recommended that this meal be served twice a day. It may be served as is or moistened with warm water. When used as a supplemental meal, the suggested equivalents are 20 nuggets for half a cup of kibble or half a can of wet food.

Feedback from dog owners is mostly positive. Many love the heart-shaped nuggets. And a few said they found the product to be a great value for the dollar.

A good number also said that they serve the product as a treat because their dogs love it. There are a few however that claimed that their pets did not touch them. There was also some concern about its high-fat content, which could be unsafe for not-so-active dogs.

Overall, this turkey recipe is a premium quality dog food that is extra high in protein and fat. The product however falls in the high price category and may be especially expensive for owners of larger or multiple dogs. It is highly recommended for active and working dogs.

What Customers Like and Dislike about Stewart Raw Naturals?

Customers like that the ingredients are all recognizable and that there isn’t a laundry list. The ingredients start with whole proteins and organ meats, giving dogs a solid protein base. Many customers’ dogs seemed more energetic and had less itching and allergy responses once owners switched to Stewart.

Stewart isn’t cheap, and that is sometimes a complaint. However, because you don’t have to feed your dog as much per serving as you would that cheap kibble, it could help offset that increased cost just a little bit. Also, you may not waste as much food trying to get your dog to eat it as you do the kibble.

Some customers also noticed that their dogs seemed to have more gas than usual. Higher protein foods can sometimes have that effect. Transition your dog more slowly to the new food by mixing the old with the new until your dog is fully transitioned to the new food. Feed less of the old food each day.

Overall, customers were highly pleased and felt their dogs’ health improved being on Stewart. They were pleased with skin and coat health and noticed an improvement in senior dogs’ as well.

Positive

  • I have a very finicky eater with skin issues. My dog chows down on this instantly. I mix half kibble with half raw, but she eats it all now. She actually sits in the kitchen waiting for me to put the food down. Has helped a lot with her skin issues.” Paula, chewy.com

Negative

  • The patties don't look or smell palatable. My dogs (3) smelled them and walked away. Cutting them into pieces is similar to cutting up a piece of dense molded styrofoam. I was expecting the patty to crumble like a meat patty but it appears to be a liquid type mix that is poured into a mold and then freeze dried. I was disappointed with the product, but, some dogs might really like it; just not mine.” Karmar, chewy.com
