Who Makes Pro Plan Dog Food?

The Pro Plan brand of dog food is part of the Purina family of brands. This and other Purina brands are produced and manufactured by the Nestle Purina PetCare company, a subsidiary of Nestle that is based in St. Louis, Missouri. Nestle Purina PetCare is the largest pet food company in the United States and the second largest in the world. This company was formed from the Ralston Purina company when it merged with Friskies PetCare in 2001. Other brands that fall under the Purina umbrella include Alpo, Beggin’ Strips, Beneful, Mighty Dog, Purina Beyond, Purina Dog Chow, and Purina Veterinary Diets.

Is Pro Plan Made in the United States?

The Nestle Purina PetCare company is headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri but they have operations all over North America and in Africa, Asia, Europe, and Latin America. According to the Purina website, 99% of their products are made in the United States. If you consult the Pro Plan website in particular, you will find that 100% of Pro Plan products are made in Purina-owned U.S. facilities.

Where Does Pro Plan Get Their Ingredients?

In the past, the Nestle Purina PetCare company has had problems with recalls due to poor-quality ingredients sourced from China. On the Pro Plan website, however, Purina makes many claims about the quality and safety of their ingredients – they also remind their customers that Purina was the first dry dog food brand to use real meat as the first ingredient. When it comes to their ingredients in general, Purina claims that “each ingredient is selected to play a role in the advanced nutrition that helps your pet thrive”. They do not, however, provide specific details about where their ingredients come from.

Pro Plan Dog Food Recall History

On the Pro Plan website, Purina states that they “obsess over the quality and safety” of all of their products. Not only does Purina have more than 85 years of innovation behind them, but they also have more than 400 scientists, veterinarians, and animal nutritionists on staff to help them develop and test their products. Purina also states that they are committed to a “relentless focus on the nutrition, quality and safety” of their foods. All of this considered, you might assume that Purina products haven’t been subject to many recalls, but you would be wrong. The Purina company as a whole has a fairly extensive history of product recalls, though not all of them involve the Pro Plan brand in particular. Here are the details for all of the Purina recalls in recent history:

  • In March 2016, Purina issued a voluntary recall for various Pro Plan Savory Meals and Beneful products due to inadequate vitamins and minerals.

Pro Plan Dog Food Reviews

The Pro Plan brand of dog food is marketed as one of Purina’s premium pet food brands. Pro Plan claims to provide “outstanding nutrition for those who want the absolute best for their dog”. A review of several Pro Plan product reveals, however, that this so-called “outstanding” nutrition comes largely from questionable ingredients. It is true that many Pro Plan recipes start with real meat as the first ingredient, but what Pro Plan doesn’t tell you is that things generally go downhill from there. Many Pro Plan recipes include corn, wheat, and soy ingredients as well as plant proteins and by-products. Overall, Pro Plan dog food leaves much to be desired.

Pro Plan Dry Review: Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula

This Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula is complete and balanced to help adult dogs maintain a healthy bodyweight. This formula features high-quality chicken protein as the main ingredient with carbohydrate support from rice. With plenty of omega fatty acids, this formula will help to improve and maintain the condition of your dog’s skin and coat plus, with natural prebiotic fibers, it will promote digestive health as well. As part of the Savor line of products, this recipe is designed for optimal flavor and palatability – it comes in a hard kibble mixed with tender, shredded pieces for the flavor and texture your dog craves.

As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is fresh chicken. Chicken is a meat-rich protein and, as an animal protein, it contains all of the essential amino acids your dog needs. Protein is especially important to support the growth and development of puppies. It is important to note, however, that fresh meats like chicken contain as much as 80% moisture by volume. When the final product is cooked to a moisture level of 12% (as per the guaranteed analysis), the volume of that protein could be much lower. This is when supplementary proteins become very important. This Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula contains a few supplemental proteins, namely poultry by-product, fish meal, and dried egg product. You will also see soybean meal and corn gluten meal on the list. While both of these are plant-based ingredients, they are very high in protein. Unfortunately, that protein is less biologically valuable for your dog then any animal protein. It is also troubling to see that most of the supplementary proteins in this recipe are unnamed ingredients and/or by-products.

The main carbohydrates used in this formula are brewers rice and whole grain wheat. Do not let the words “whole grain” fool you here – wheat is never a good ingredient for dogs. In addition to being one of the most common food allergens, wheat products are also low in nutritional value for dogs and generally hard to digest. Brewers rice is a by-product of the beer brewing process and it contains very limited nutritional value. There are a number of other low-quality carbohydrates in this recipe as well – things like whole grain corn and wheat bran. The only good thing is that the crude fiber content of this formula is only 3% – that is well below the 5% recommended maximum for dogs.

The remaining ingredients in this Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula consist primarily of fats, flavors, and supplements. Animal fat is the primary source of fat used in this recipe and, while it is an animal-based fat, it comes from an unnamed source so it is very difficult to judge the quality. Your dog will get some supplementary fat from the fish meal, but there are no high-quality sources of fat in this recipe. In terms of supplements, this recipe does include some chelated minerals which is good – these are minerals that have been bound to protein molecules which makes them more biologically valuable for your dog. There are a number of vitamin supplements, however, that offer limited bioavailability – natural sources for these vitamins would be better.

This Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 16%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 3%
  • Moisture (Max) – 12%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.8%
  • Vitamin E (Min) – 460 IU/kg
  • Calorie Content – 3,997 kcal/kg (382 kcal/cup)

This Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Pro Plan Dry Food Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Overall, this Pro Plan Savor Adult Shredded Blend Chicken & Rice Formula is not as good a product as Purina would have you believe. This recipe starts out strong with fresh chicken as the first ingredient but it quickly goes downhill. In fact, aside from a few chelated minerals, chicken is the only high-quality ingredient in this formula. This recipe makes heavy use of corn, soy, and wheat ingredients, all of which have a high risk for triggering allergies and offer low nutritional value. Furthermore, the fats used in this recipe come from unnamed sources of questionable quality, and there are few natural sources for key vitamins and minerals. This recipe leaves a lot to be desired.

Pro Plan Canned Review: Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée

This Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée is part of the Naturals line of Pro Plan products. This being the case, you might expect it to contain mostly high-quality ingredients. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case. This recipe is marketed as a classic recipe – and a grain-free one at that – made with real turkey as the first ingredient. Pro Plan makes note that this formula contains no corn, wheat, or soy products and no poultry by-products. It is also free from artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. A quick review of the ingredients list for this recipe, however, reveals some disappointing inclusions.

As promised, turkey is the first ingredient in this recipe. Turkey is a high-quality ingredient as well as a meat-rich source of protein. Because it is an animal protein it is also a complete protein – it contains all of the essential amino acids your dog needs. As a fresh meat, turkey contains up to 80% moisture by volume but that won’t be a problem because canned foods like this contain at least 78% moisture. The second ingredient is water which, though it doesn’t provide any nutrients, helps to preserve the moisture content of this recipe.

While turkey is the main source of protein in this Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée, it is not the only source. Several supplementary protein sources are included but, unfortunately, few of them match the quality of the first ingredient. The supplementary proteins included in this recipe are liver, meat by-products, and chicken. Fresh chicken is an excellent ingredient, but meat by-products are not. Liver is not necessarily a bad ingredient but, because it comes from an unnamed source, it is difficult to judge its quality. At 9% crude protein, however, this recipe does meet your dog’s needs for protein and essential amino acids.

The rest of the ingredients in this recipe consist of carbohydrates, thickeners, and supplements. Sweet potatoes are the only carbohydrate ingredient included in this recipe and it is a good ingredient. Not only are sweet potatoes gluten-free and grain-free, but they contain vital nutrients and are considered highly digestible for dogs. This Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée contains guar gum and carrageenan as well, both of which act as thickeners and supplementary sources of fiber. Unfortunately, carrageenan has been linked to carcinogenic effects in pets so it is a low-quality ingredient. It is also important to note that none of the mineral supplements are chelated and the vitamins offer limited bioavailability because they are synthetic.

This Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée Formula has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 9%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 6%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 2%
  • Moisture (Max) – 78%
  • Calorie Content – 1,272 kcal/kg (469 kcal/can)

This Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance of adult dogs.

Pro Plan Canned Food Rating: 2.5/5 stars

Overall, this Pro Plan Naturals Classic Turkey & Sweet Potato Entrée offers limited nutrition value for dogs. The recipe starts off well with turkey as the first ingredient and it doesn’t hurt that fresh chicken is also listed. Unfortunately, the other supplementary proteins are unnamed or by-products which severely limits their nutritional benefits. Sweet potatoes are a quality source of digestible carbohydrates the benefits may be canceled out by the potential carcinogenic effects of the carrageenan. Overall, this isn’t the worst product that Purina has to offer but it is certainly not the best.
