Petguard considers themselves a pioneer of the all-natural dog food industry. They claim they were making organic foods with the best ingredients long before anyone even thought about it.

The company specializes in organic canned foods that contain no artificial products, added sugars or salts. Each of their dinners gets uniquely formulated with the correct balance of protein, fat, and carbohydrates.

Something that separates Petguard from other dog foods is they don’t believe in designing diets around specific dog’s needs. Instead, they formulate all their meals to meet the general requirements of every pup.

Behind the Brand

The story of Petguard starts in 1979 with a woman by the name of Sharon Sherman. She grew up in a home where they always fed their dogs a natural homemade food that they cooked from scratch. At an early age, she realized the importance of feeding your pet high-quality, human-grade ingredients.

Before the fads of organic and all-natural entered the marketplace, this family was running a Natural Foods Grocery store where they educated their customers about the importance of organic ingredients and nutrition.

At this time, commercially made pet food did not follow these types of guidelines and the family realized there was a significant gap in the marketplace.

Petguard began creating wholesome, natural foods with the best ingredients and their formulas have remained the same as the years went on. Petguard is dedicated to the complete health of a pet and designing food that appeals to every pup.

Overall the ingredients in this food are excellent, and nothing stands out as a low-quality filler. There are no by-products or artificial preservatives either.

  • Fat: 6.5%
  • Fiber: 2%

Unlike some of the other foods in this line, this one is not organic, so the origin of the vegetables used in processing is unknown. That said, we don’t entirely understand why a pet owner would feed their dog a vegetarian dinner, we would recommend using this alongside their kibble, so your pup gets the necessary protein and fat they need.

Overall, the reviews are excellent, and the food has 4.3 out of 5 stars with 85% of reviewers recommending the product. Many customers say their pup loves the flavor and eats it with no problem. They do complain about it being dry though, wishing that they could add more moisture into the can.

Positive

Amazing Results – My dog Jake had been using other foods for a while and always had trouble with his coat and allergies. I switched him to LifeSpan by PetGuard, and the results are great! He sprints much faster to his bowl. I can tell the difference with this high-quality food. – Chewy Customer

Couldn’t be happier! – Our pups are doing so well, and they love this kibble. We switched to Petguard several months ago, and our dogs are doing great. We mix this kibble with various canned food and they clean their dishes. Chewy is convenient, especially love not having to lug big bags from the stores! – Chewy Customer

Veggie Food for Fussy Doggies! – My dog is so picky and weird about food. No joke: this is the only food I can get her to eat consistently without sitting next to her on the floor and coaxing and begging her to eat. I usually mix this with some chickpeas from a can or some baked sweet potato to change things up for her. I also like that this food doesn't smell weird! Good for her and me. I'm so happy that Chewy has such great prices and fast shipping – Chewy Customer

Negative

Great food but too dry-My dogs love this but you need a chisel to get it out of the can so I've stopped getting it. I don't understand why they can't add a little water. If it weren't for that, I'd give it five stars. – Chewy Customer

Not so much – One of my two dogs eats anything, but he doesn't seem to care for this food. He just kind of picks at it. The other dog won't touch it. For this reason, I can't recommend this food. – Chewy Customer

A lot of the time with healthy dog food, pet owners have a hard time getting their pups to eat it because they don’t like the flavor or the smell.

If you’re looking to switch your canines to healthy food but you still want them to enjoy meal time, we highly recommend giving Petguard a try.

Who owns PetGuard?

Sharon Sherman, one of the founders of PetGuard®, grew up watching her mother cook healthy meals for the pets in their home. This started Sharon's early belief in the importance of wholesome natural food in the health and well-being of people and pets.

Do PetGuard® foods contain grains?

Yes, PetGuard foods contain grains. PetGuard® has never pursued the grain-free fad. For the last 40 years, we have focused on producing the same quality formulas which contain a variety of proteins, grains, healthy fats and vegetables.

Why doesn't PetGuard® state that human grade ingredients are used in your products?

According to the USDA and FDA, it is illegal to use or promote the use of the verbiage 'human-grade ingredients' because there is no legal term as 'human grade'. PetGuard® uses ingredients that we would eat ourselves. The best ingredients that PetGuard® uses in the foods we bring to your pets are the result of 25 years of working with our suppliers and careful monitoring of the quality demanded for products manufactured to our specifications.

What preservatives are used in PetGuard® products?

PetGuard®dry foods are preserved with mixed tocopherols and vitamins C and E. These natural preservatives serve two functions: they prevent the food from spoiling and they scavenge free radicals that are known to cause cancer and cell damage.
