Pedigree is a well-known brand with happy dogs splashed on yellow backgrounds, but behind that tasteful marketing lies a cheaper brand of pet food that may have some pet owners running away. While it’s definitely a bargain brand and should help you save money in the long run while offering nutrition that covers your bases, there are probably better options out there.

Pedigree has gone through a few changes over the years under the watchful eye of the Mars Corporation (yes of candy fame), but it’s real claim to fame is the budget prices. It’s widely available and satisfy a pet owner’s urge to bargain shop or for those who are feeding quite a few dogs all at once and can’t afford premium foods.

Let’s take a look at what Pedigree has to offer to find out if it might be a viable option for you or if it should send you running in the opposite direction.

Behind the Brand

Pedigree claims to have nearly 100 year of experience or over 50 years depending on which part of the company you’re talking about. While Mars corporation has been around for a hundred or so years, they haven’t always had Pedigree. Pedigree itself didn’t become the name until the 80s, but the original company did begin to operate in the mid-19th century.

Pedigree started off as a company called Chappie that took low quality, rejected meats and began canning it for dog food purposes. This was one of the first commercial dog food options. Before this and a handful of other companies, there wasn’t anything convenient about feeding your dog.

Chappie evolved over the years into the Pedigree that we know and seem to love. It’s made directly by a company called Kal Kan, which is a subsidiary of Mars Incorporated. Kal Kan switched to the Pedigree brand name in 1985, but the company has a much longer history than that. Pedigree isn’t the only pet care brand that falls under this label, but all the different pet food options are decidedly in the budget range.

Today, Pedigree operates under the idea that pet care should be available and affordable for all. Mars Inc has massive distribution across the world, and they’ve taken the company from it’s humble roots in canned meat pet foods to what we know today with that familiar smiling dog on the cheerful yellow bags and cans. Wherever you are, you can probably find the Pedigree name on the shelf.

What Types Of Dog Food Does Pedigree Offer?

The company doesn’t claim to be top tier at all, but there are a few ingredients that should give pet owners some pause. Meat should always be the first ingredient in any premium pet food, but Pedigree’s most common first ingredient is actually corn. This ingredient is a cheap filler intended to bring down the cost of the food while still providing enough calories to maintain energy. These kinds of ingredients can make it hard for some dogs to maintain proper weight and can add difficulties for sensitive dogs.

Pedigree comes in two different basic options, wet and dry, but these include choices for various life stages and a few options for size. There are even some intended to help with weight. Their wet foods make up the bulk of their offerings with plenty of flavor choices.

Pedigree Recall History List:

  • Pedigree has had more than its share of recalls. In 2014 packages were recalled because of possible metal fragments in some of the recipes. In 2012, three of the recipes were recalled because of reports of bits of plastic that could cause dogs to choke. In 2008, there was a recall because of possible salmonella contamination. Although Pedigree hasn’t had any problems lately, this is a pattern of recall that should make you think.

Best Pedigree Dog Food Recipes

If you’re looking for a few recommendations for budget dog foods, Pedigree does have a lot of flavors and life stages. There are enough flavors that you may be able to satisfy even your pickiest dog with a flavor like cheeseburger or liver. Let’s look at a few notable options.

Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition Chicken and Rice

This is a mainstay in many households with a highly affordable price and a flavor that satisfies most dogs. It uses corn as the first ingredient, but whole meat and bone meal for protein. It includes plenty of vitamins and minerals but also contains artificial colors and some flavors. We wouldn’t recommend it for long term use, but in a pet food emergency, this one will get the job done.

Pedigree Chunky Ground Dinner in Beef, Bacon, and Cheese

This wet food is an excellent way to encourage a picky or sick dog to eat. It’s great for adding on top of other, healthier foods, but dogs tend to love the flavor on its own. It uses chicken and meat by-products, so you may want to consider a more organic or holistic option for long term use or for use as a meal by itself. However, you can’t beat the flavors, and your dog will most likely love it.

Pedigree Small Dog Steak and Vegetable Flavor

Small dogs need special kibble for their mouths and energy requirements. This one does an adequate job of keeping weight in check while providing a balanced meal. It uses both corn and by-product meal so be aware of what you’re getting into and use it only when you can’t find something else or if your budget is set in stone.

Customer Reviews

Customers appreciate the budget option and the ease of finding it in stores. Not everyone can order online, so Pedigree’s wide availability is an excellent plus. Customers also appreciate the wide range of flavors in both dry and wet foods, which can help encourage dogs to eat when you don’t have other options available. Some dogs seem to do well on the food, and for those customers, Pedigree is the only option.

What Do People Like And Like About Pedigree?

People like the flavors and the affordability. When customers start digging into the different ingredients, they get less enthusiastic about the food, but overall, it gets pretty good reviews from both chewy (average around four stars) and Amazon (average rating just under four stars).

  • “Buffy is getting old we’ve had her 5 yrs not sure how old she was when we got her see she was a breeder in a puppy mill but anyhoo her teeth are starting to fall out, and regular food was hard for her to eat so we got this food and at first she wouldn’t eat it so I put some in a small cell phone box and started calling it buffys special food I get her excited about her special food and she gobbles it up so I wanna say thank you for the variety” Buffy,
  • “My dogs love the steak flavor and enjoy eating this food. They have had no digestive issues which is important, and their coats still look nice. I will continue to buy it.” ChewyChx,

  • “First ingredient is corn will switch dry dog food to one that has no corn.” Bill,

Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition Roasted Chicken, Rice, and Vegetable Dog Food Review

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

First 5 Ingredients: Ground Whole Grain Corn, Meat And Bone Meal Source Of Calcium, Corn Gluten Meal, Animal Fat Source Of Omega 6 Fatty Acids Preserved With BHA & Citric Acid, Soybean Meal

These are not premium ingredients. Now that we’ve gotten that part out of the way, the food does an adequate job of giving most dogs plenty of energy throughout the day and providing protein sources for lean muscles.

It’s satisfactory in the budget department, so if you’re feeding a large group of dogs temporarily, it can help you balance your wallet’s needs with your dog’s nutrition. It does have plenty of protein and good fat content, but it uses quite a few ingredients that we don’t recommend, such as corn, soy, and artificial colors.

Pedigree’s adult foods are intended for all-purpose use and aren’t for dogs with any kind of sensitivities. Your dog may experience some adverse reaction to common allergens on the ingredients list, but if your dog has proper digestion and no allergy issues, it may thrive on Pedigree.

Introduce it slowly and make sure that your dog has plenty of fresh water to drink because kibble can be drying. This kibble should also be pretty comfortable for your dog to chew. Overall, it’s a good budget, middle of the road option for those who don’t have much choice otherwise.
