Meet Pedigree Dog Food
Pedigree is a well-known brand with happy dogs splashed on yellow backgrounds, but behind that tasteful marketing lies a cheaper brand of pet food that may have some pet owners running away.
While it’s definitely a bargain brand and should help you save money in the long run while offering nutrition that covers your bases, there are probably better options out there.
Here at DogFood.Guide we have a dedicated mission to provide dog owners like you with well-researched information so they can provide the best care and nutrition to their dogs.
Our readers rely upon the dog food reviews, articles and recall alerts that we research and publish. We also routinely update and review our own reviews ensuring that any changes by manufacturers are brought to your attention.
DogFood.Guide is maintained by Mary Nielsen & her staff. Mary is an animal lover of both dogs and cats. She and her staff are passionate about animals and work hard to provide you with a wealth of information for you and your dog.
Pedigree has gone through a few changes over the years under the watchful eye of the Mars Corporation (yes of candy fame), but it’s real claim to fame is the budget prices.
It’s widely available and satisfy a pet owner’s urge to bargain shop or for those who are feeding quite a few dogs all at once and can’t afford premium foods.
Let’s take a look at what Pedigree dog food has to offer to find out if it might be a viable option for you or if it should send you running in the opposite direction.

Behind the Brand
Pedigree claims to have nearly 100 year of experience or over 50 years depending on which part of the company you’re talking about.
While Mars corporation has been around for a hundred or so years, they haven’t always had Pedigree. Pedigree itself didn’t become the name until the 80s, but the original company did begin to operate in the mid-19th century.
Pedigree started off as a company called Chappie that took low quality, rejected meats and began canning it for dog food purposes.
This was one of the first commercial dog food options. Before this and a handful of other companies, there wasn’t anything convenient about feeding your dog.

Chappie evolved over the years into the Pedigree that we know and seem to love. It’s made directly by a company called Kal Kan, which is a subsidiary of Mars Incorporated.
Kal Kan switched to the Pedigree brand name in 1985, but the company has a much longer history than that. Pedigree isn’t the only pet care brand that falls under this label, but all the different pet food options are decidedly in the budget range.
Today, Pedigree operates under the idea that pet care should be available and affordable for all. Mars Inc has massive distribution across the world, and they’ve taken the company from it’s humble roots in canned meat pet foods to what we know today with that familiar smiling dog on the cheerful yellow bags and cans. Wherever you are, you can probably find the Pedigree name on the shelf.

The first five ingredients of this Pedigree Complete Nutrition recipe are ground whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal (source of glucosamine & chondroitin sulfate), corn gluten meal, animal fat (source of omega 6 fatty acids [preserved with BHA/citric acid]), and meat and bone meal (source of calcium).
Whole grain corn and other whole grains are actually good sources of carbohydrates and fiber. Fiber helps aid dogs’ digestion, which is important to their overall health and stool quality. While many brands offer a grain-free meal that are supposedly healthier than grain-inclusive ones, it is important to focus on the actual nutritional contribution of the ingredient to the entire meal.
In most grain-free dog foods, the grains are replaced with potatoes, peas, or legumes. According to Rebecca Remillard, PhD, DVM, DACVN, founder and president of Veterinary Nutritional Consultations, Inc, these ingredients provide starch which make up around 40-60% of most grain-free food. Thus, it is nutritionally the same as a meal wherein whole grains provide the starch.
When it comes to protein, the main source for this recipe is chicken by-product meal followed by corn gluten meal. Corn gluten meal is a protein-rich by-product of corn. While these protein sources are not top of the line proteins, they are still able to provide the adequate amounts needed by dogs for complete and balanced nutrition.

Best Pedigree Dog Food Recipes
If you’re looking for a few recommendations for budget dog foods, Pedigree does have a lot of flavors and life stages. There are enough flavors that you may be able to satisfy even your pickiest dog with a flavor like cheeseburger or liver. Let’s look at a few notable options.
1. Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition Chicken and Rice
This is a mainstay in many households with a highly affordable price and a flavor that satisfies most dogs. It uses corn as the first ingredient, but whole meat and bone meal for protein. It includes plenty of vitamins and minerals but also contains artificial colors and some flavors. We wouldn’t recommend it for long term use, but in a pet food emergency, this one will get the job done.
2. Pedigree Chunky Ground Dinner in Beef, Bacon, and Cheese
This wet food is an excellent way to encourage a picky or sick dog to eat. It’s great for adding on top of other, healthier foods, but dogs tend to love the flavor on its own. It uses chicken and meat by-products, so you may want to consider a more organic or holistic option for long term use or for use as a meal by itself. However, you can’t beat the flavors, and your dog will most likely love it.
3. Pedigree Small Dog Steak and Vegetable Flavor
Small dogs need special kibble for their mouths and energy requirements. This one does an adequate job of keeping weight in check while providing a balanced meal. It uses both corn and by-product meal so be aware of what you’re getting into and use it only when you can’t find something else or if your budget is set in stone.
Customers appreciate the budget option and the ease of finding it in stores. Not everyone can order online, so Pedigree’s wide availability is an excellent plus. Customers also appreciate the wide range of flavors in both dry and wet foods, which can help encourage dogs to eat when you don’t have other options available. Some dogs seem to do well on the food, and for those customers, Pedigree is the only option.
What Do People Like And Like About Pedigree?
People like the flavors and the affordability. When customers start digging into the different ingredients, they get less enthusiastic about the food, but overall, it gets pretty good reviews from both chewy (average around four stars) and Amazon (average rating just under four stars).
- “Buffy is getting old we've had her 5 yrs not sure how old she was when we got her see she was a breeder in a puppy mill but anyhoo her teeth are starting to fall out, and regular food was hard for her to eat so we got this food and at first she wouldn't eat it so I put some in a small cell phone box and started calling it buffys special food I get her excited about her special food and she gobbles it up so I wanna say thank you for the variety” Buffy, chewy.com
- “My dogs love the steak flavor and enjoy eating this food. They have had no digestive issues which is important, and their coats still look nice. I will continue to buy it.” ChewyChx, chewy.com
- “First ingredient is corn will switch dry dog food to one that has no corn.” Bill, chewy.com
Is Pedigree dog food bad for your dog?
If given long term, pedigree can make dogs more prone to liver or kidney problems. The first ingredient in this dog food is corn, corn is generally a filler. The second ingredient is poultry by-product meal, which is dried product from a slaughterhouse.
Which dog food is better Purina or Pedigree?
Purina One obviously has a lot more flavors for both dog and cat foods and has had less recalls than Pedigree which offers only dog food, however, both are great brands and offer great nutritional values for pets.
Is pedigree better than Ol Roy?
Neither is good, but Pedigree is marginally better. It is mostly fillers. If you must feed kibble and cannot afford Purina Pro Plan, Eukanuba, or Royal Canin, you are better off feeding Purina Dog Chow over either Pedigree or Ol Roy.
Can I add water to Pedigree dog food?
Yes. If your pet has begun showing less interest in the food, it may be time to add a little gravy. It's real simple, too. Just take about a ¼ cup of filtered water and add it to the top of the bowl of kibble in order to moisten and enhance the flavor of the pet food.
