The NutriSource brand of dog food is owned by KLN Family Brands. The company was founded by Darrell “Tuffy” Nelson and it began in 1947 as the Pine Lakes Feed company in Perham, Minnesota. After graduating from college, Darrel’s son, Kenny, developed a partnership with his father to create the Tuffy’s Dog Food Company. After 39 years of making economy line pet foods, the brand expanded into the Super Premium Pet Food Industry with the release of NutriSource pet foods. The company continued to expand with the release of Pure Vita and Natural Planet Organics, both of which are still under the KLN Family Brands umbrella.

As a family-owned and -operated pet food manufacturer, NutriSource is dedicated to quality – it is their goal to produce “high quality pet foods that you can trust”. This being the case, you shouldn’t be surprised to learn that NutriSource is also dedicated to making sure that all of their recipes are made right here in the United States. NutriSource pet food products are all made using state-of-the-art equipment in a manufacturing plant located in Perham, Minnesota. This plant is the only facility that produces NutriSource and other KLN Family Brands – it is also a pet food-only manufacturing plant.

Where Does NutriSource Get Their Ingredients?

Each one of NutriSource’s dog food products is designed for maximum digestibility and nutrient absorption. Not only does that mean using high-quality ingredients, but their recipes offer a concentrated source of nutrition which means you can feed your dog less and he will produce less waste. In order to create such a high-quality product, NutriSource relies on the highest quality ingredients such as premium animal proteins, digestible carbohydrates, fresh fruits and vegetables, and beneficial supplements. According to the NutriSource website, this brand uses “the highest quality, fresh, raw ingredients” that are all testes upon arrival to ensure quality and safety. Unfortunately, NutriSource doesn’t provide specific information about where they get their ingredients. Because all of their products are made in the USA, however, it is likely that they use primarily US-sourced ingredients.

NutriSource Dog Food Recall History

Although NutriSource products are made in a facility that produces other brands, it is a pet food-only facility. It is also worth noting that this is the only facility in which NutriSource products are made, so it helps to ensure consistency. NutriSource follows strict standards for quality and safety when it comes to their ingredients as well as their manufacturing processes, so it shouldn’t surprise you that there have been no product recalls for this brand to date.

NutriSource Dry Review: NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula

This NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional needs of dogs in all life stages. Not only is it nutritionally balanced, but it is full of fresh flavor and it offers excellent palatability and digestibility as well. This formula features fresh quail as the primary ingredient and, because it is grain-free, it is a great choice for dogs that suffer from food allergies and sensitivities. You’ll also be glad to know that this formula includes NutriSource’s “Good 4 Life” system which is made with the finest ingredients available.

As you already know, the first ingredient in this recipe is quail. Quail is a meat-rich animal protein that is also loaded with natural flavor. One thing to be aware of with fresh meats like quail is that they may contain as much as 70% to 80% moisture by volume. When the product is cooked and most of that moisture is lost, it is possible that the total volume of protein the quail provides could be much lower. That won’t be a problem for this NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula, however, because there are plenty of supplementary proteins. For example, duck comes second on the list and duck meal comes fourth – there is also turkey meal in the ninth ingredient slot. The duck meal and turkey meal are particularly valuable because they have already been cooked to remove moisture – that makes them both highly-concentrated sources of animal protein.

The main carbohydrates in this NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula are green lentils, peas, and garbanzo beans. These are all gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates which is perfect for dogs that suffer from food allergies or sensitivities. These ingredients provide plenty of carbohydrate energy as well as dietary fiber. This recipe also includes some supplementary sources of fiber such as pea flour, sunflower meal, and flaxseeds. You’ll also find alfalfa meal, red lentils, and tapioca starch later in the list. All in all, this formula contains 6% crude fiber which is a little higher than the 5% maximum most animal nutritionists recommend. This fiber comes from digestible sources, however, so it may not cause a problem.

The remaining ingredients in this formula consist primarily of fats and supplements. The main source of fat in this NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula is chicken fat which, though it may not sound appetizing to you, is rich in flavor and nutrients for your dog. Your dog will also get some fat from the sunflower meal, flax seeds, and sunflower oil. All of these ingredients work together to ensure a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support your dog’s healthy skin and coat. In terms of supplements, this formula contains vitamins, minerals, and dried fermentation products. It is a good thing to see that many of the minerals are chelated – this means that they have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them easier for your dog’s body to digest and absorb. Dried fermentation products act as probiotics to support your dog’s healthy and regular digestion.

This NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 26%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 14%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 6%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1.6%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 1.0%
  • Vitamin E (Min) – 150 IU/kg
  • Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.6%
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.8%
  • Calorie Content – 3,800 kcal/kg (430 kcal/cup)

This NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages including growth of large size dogs (70 pounds or more as an adult).

NutriSource Dry Food Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Overall, this NutriSource Prairie Select Grain-Free Dry Food Formula is a high-protein recipe made with plenty of healthy and digestible ingredients. With quail and duck as the main source of protein and with grain-free carbohydrates, this recipe is great for dogs that suffer from food allergies and sensitivities. The only potential problem with this recipe comes from the pea flour and alfalfa meal – both of these ingredients contain as much as 25% protein, but it is plant protein and therefore less biologically valuable than animal protein. It is unclear whether these ingredients contribute significantly to the total protein content of the recipe. It is also worth noting that the crude fiber content of this formula is a little bit higher than is ideal.

NutriSource Canned Review: NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula

This NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula is complete and balanced for dogs in all life stages which means that it can be a good choice for a puppy or for an adult dog. This formula is part of the original lineup of canned food recipes which means that it is not grain-free. Unless your dog is allergic or sensitive to grains, however, this won’t be a problem because the grains used are whole grains which offer excellent digestibility for many dogs. In addition to being highly digestible, this formula is also rich in premium protein and natural meat flavor. Overall, your dog would be lucky to receive this recipe as his staple diet.

The first ingredient in this formula is fresh lamb, a meat-rich source of animal protein. While fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture by volume, that won’t be a problem for this canned food recipe. When dry foods are cooked, most of the moisture cooks out which leaves the final volume for fresh meats much lower than the original volume. This formula is high in moisture, however, so that won’t happen. It is also worth noting that lamb broth is the second ingredient. This ingredient contributes to this NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula’s 78% moisture content and also adds some natural flavor that your dog is sure to love.

The remaining ingredients in this formula consist of supplementary proteins, digestible carbohydrates, thickeners, and supplements. Both lamb liver and ocean fish act as supplementary proteins, as does the whole dried egg. For carbohydrate energy and dietary fiber, this NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula relies on brown rice and pearled barley. Again, these may not be grain-free carbohydrates but unless your dog is allergic or sensitive they are considered highly digestible. The guar gum is used as a thickener, as is the carrageenan. Carrageenan raises a red flag, however, because it has been linked to some potential carcinogenic effects in animals. This formula contains several chelated minerals which helps to ensure maximum nutrient absorption and there are vitamin supplements for balance.

This NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 8%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 8%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 1.5%
  • Moisture (Max) – 78%
  • Calcium (Min) – 0.5%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.3%
  • Calorie Content – 1,387 kcal/kg, 503 kcal/can

This NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

NutriSource Canned Food Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Overall, this NutriSource Lamb & Rice Canned Food Formula is a quality source of nutrition and natural flavor for dogs in all life stages. This recipe starts off strong with lamb as the first ingredient and three supplementary proteins listed later. The brown rice and pearled barley that serve as the primary carbohydrates are considered highly digestible for most dogs – they provide both carbohydrate energy and dietary fiber. Though this recipe has many good things, there are some red flags. Carrageenan, however, is a thickening ingredient which has been linked to carcinogenic effects in some studies. It is also important to note that alfalfa meal, an ingredient rich in plant protein, also appears on the list – it is unclear how much it contributes to the total protein content of the formula. All in all, this recipe has more good points than bad, though it may not be the right choice for all dogs.

  • Can the large breed Lamb and pea grain free dog food be feed to my 12 week old large breed puppy instead of your puppy food?

  • I have had my dog Izzy on PureVita, both the duck and venison for about 2 years. She started having problems urinating, so I took her to the vet. The X-ray showed a large bladder stone. So as of today, we have her on a prescription Hill’s SD diet, that hopefully, eventually will dissolve. We will probably go ahead next month, when we have the money, and have it surgically removed. I just wanted to let you know in case someone else has had the same problem. We buy our food from Earthwise in Richardson, Texas. I love the ladies that own it and will continue having Izzy clipped once a year. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not blaming it on the food, but it might be the problem.

  • I’ve been feeding my dog your canned food for about 2years& was so happy I found that my dog looked forward to eating it everyday! He was sick recently w/congestive heart failure & was hospitalized for several days. He’s home now doing well but us on heart needs & water pills. To my dismay my dog will not touch any of his canned Nutrisource food & he loved it.I thought maybe their was a recall but didn’t see one anywhere. Do you think it’s just the melds he’s on. Any suggestions? Should he go to the senior food he’s 10. Thank you
