Not only does Kirkland use fresh ingredients in their formulas, but each recipe is enriched with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs as well as probiotics.

A quick review of several Kirkland and Nature’s Domain products reveals that the claims this company makes about their pet foods are founded in truth.

There are certainly ways in which these products could be improved but, for the most part, they are nutritionally balanced.

This Kirkland Signature Super Premium Lamb, Rice & Vegetable recipe is formulated to meet the unique nutritional needs of adult dogs. With real lamb as the main ingredient, this formula is rich in both protein and natural flavor.

This formula features whole-grain carbohydrates which offer excellent digestibility for many dogs, and it is supplemented with fresh fruits and vegetables as well as probiotics. All in all, this recipe is made using “select ingredients for consistency, wholesomeness and optimal nutrition” and that is exactly what it provides.

As was already mentioned, the first ingredient in this product is fresh lamb. One thing you should know about fresh meats like lamb is that, because they contain up to 80% moisture by volume, their volume could change during cooking.

When most of the moisture cooks out of the product during manufacturing, the final volume for the fresh lamb could be much lower.

Meat meals like lamb meal (the second ingredient listed) have already been cooked to remove moisture, so that volume won’t change much during processing. These two ingredients combine to ensure that this formula remains rich in high-quality animal protein.

The third ingredient in this Kirkland Signature Super Premium Adult Dog Lamb, Rice & Vegetable recipe is whole grain brown rice, followed by ground white rice and rice bran. Rice is highly digestible for most dogs but, because it is a grain, it may cause problems for dogs with food allergies or sensitivities.

These carbohydrates are supplemented with another whole grain – cracked pearled barley – as well as potatoes, flaxseed, and millet. You will also notice that this formula contains fiber supplements like dried beet pulp and dried chicory root. There are also a number of fresh fruits and vegetables.

The main source of fat in this product is chicken fat. While it may not sound appetizing to you, chicken fat is highly nutritious for dogs and a concentrated source of energy. It is supplemented by the omega-3 content of the flaxseed and the natural fat content of the lamb, lamb meal, and fish meal.

The remaining ingredients in this recipe consist primarily of extracts, natural flavors, and supplements. This recipe contains a number of synthetic supplements, including chelated minerals which have been chemically bound to protein molecules to increase their absorption rate.

It is also worth mentioning that the fresh fruits and veggies used in this recipe act as natural sources for key nutrients. Finally, there are also dried fermentation products which act as probiotics to support your dog’s digestion.

This Kirkland Signature Super Premium Adult Dog Lamb, Rice & Vegetable recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for maintenance.

Overall, this Lamb, Rice & Vegetable recipe is a quality source of protein-rich nutrition for adult dogs. This formula starts off strong with both fresh lamb and lamb meal as the primary ingredients.

It moves along with several digestible whole grains including brown rice and cracked pearled barley. One point worth mentioning here is that while these ingredients are digestible for most dogs, some dogs with allergies or grain sensitivities may have trouble with these ingredients.

This formula contains plenty of healthy fat and essential nutrients, including chelated minerals and probiotics. There are, however, a few ingredients which some might consider questionable – dried beet pulp and brewers dried yeast. All in all, however this recipe is still very high-quality.

2. Kirkland Signature Mature Formula Chicken, Rice and Egg

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

First 5 ingredients: Chicken, Chicken Meal, Whole Grain Brown Rice, Egg Product, Oatmeal

Older dogs need particular care to maintain their health, energy, and cognitive functions. This Mature Dog formula is crafted to help mature pets remain as playful and lively just as they were when pups.

Fresh chicken, chicken meal, egg product, and fish meal make a perfect protein blend to raise the protein levels (27%) of this food to above average. Don’t be worried about the chicken meal. It’s a perfectly good ingredient that even high-end brands utilize. To simplify it, chicken meal is just chicken that has most of its water content removed.

It’s not a grain-free recipe, and that’s all right. Grains are not fillers or harmful, as others suppose. Your dog can get quite an array of nutrients from grains such as protein, vitamins B and E, carbohydrates, and lots of minerals. And those included here (barley, brown rice, white rice, and oatmeal) are some of the best types of grains to feed your dog.

And also, dogs are omnivores. They thrive on grains as much as they thrive on a grain-free one. (If you see grain-free diets, they just remove the grains but put alternatives in place. That’s because carbohydrates — which all grains contain — are one of the essentials in dog foods, aside from protein and fat.)

Chicken fat provides the fat content of this meal. Why fat? Fat is a form of concentrated energy source, and chicken fat contains plenty of omega-6 fatty acids. One other advantage of fat is that it improves the taste of recipes and makes them more palatable to your dogs.

It is also worth mentioning that this recipe contains superfoods such as cranberries and kelp and wholesome ingredients like apples, peas, and carrots. The use of fresh veggies, fruits, and seaweed provide dogs with natural sources of key nutrients, although there are also supplemental ones added in.

As dogs age, the more brittle their bones and thin their cartilages become. This results in pain and reduced mobility. For this reason, the addition of chondroitin and glucosamine are very much welcome in this formulation. These two alleviate the pain, repair the cartilages, and provide dogs with a moderate level of comfort.

We’re also happy with the inclusion of probiotics and the premium ingredients found in this recipe. Overall, this is a good choice of dog food to feed your mature pooch and to help him live a longer and healthier life.

3. Kirkland Signature Puppy Formula Chicken, Rice and Vegetable

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Puppies go through a growth phase where their young bodies try to develop as fast as possible. This growth spurt requires a lot of nutrients so that they can grow properly. It can be a critical time and what you feed your pups during this stage can influence their physical bodies and cognitive skills later on.

This recipe is designed especially for the puppy stage, where little dogs are more energetic and inquisitive. The protein content (at 28%) is higher than those found in Kirkland’s adult formulas.

This is thanks to the combination of chicken, chicken meal, egg product, and fish meal, although a percentage of the total crude protein is contributed by grains.

Two types of grains are present here — brown rice and barley. Brown rice and barley can keep a puppy’s energy level high by giving him a boost in the form of carbohydrates. These two also contain digestible fiber that can help your pup’s digestive system get accustomed to solid food and keep him feeling full longer.

Chicken fat, salmon oil, and flaxseed contribute to the fat content. Chicken fat is laden with omega-6 fatty acids, while salmon oil and flaxseed are rich in omega-6 as well as omega-3 fatty acids.

These three’s fatty acid contents help support a puppy's immune system, heart, skin, coat, and cognitive function. They also contain anti-inflammatory properties to reduce itching and help with wound healing.

Some ingredients here might catch your attention. Dried beet pulp and brewer’s yeast. Why are these often found in dog food? Well, brewer’s yeast is high in amino acids, B vitamins, and protein, and beet pulp is another excellent fiber source. These provide a natural source of key nutrients for a little dog’s body.

And of course, a well-balanced diet includes fruits and greens. This recipe has several, like carrots, peas, apples, and cranberries. Dried kelp provides additional nutritional support by providing iodine (for overall thyroid health), tons of amino acids (21 kinds), and plenty of minerals and vitamins.

This Puppy diet is nutritionally complete for little furries and is crafted according to the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profile. Aside from the three essentials (fat, protein, and carbs), it’s loaded with a few extras to help your puppy grow into a healthy and fit dog.

It has probiotics and prebiotics to maintain the proper balance of beneficial bacteria in your dog’s gut. Its DHA content will support your fur baby’s eye and brain development, and the folic acid in it ensures that your dog can metabolize all the amino acids from the food.

Dogs that are prone to weight gain or are already overweight might find their perfect food in the Kirkland Signature Super Premium Healthy Weight Formula. It is specially designed to be light on the calories but heavy on taste and nutrition so your dog won’t miss a thing.

Like all of Kirkland’s Signature meals, this one’s animal-based protein is led by chicken. The first ingredient is chicken meal and there’s also fresh chicken included as support. Grains and peas also lend some protein content, although most come from the chicken.

There are a bit more grains here when compared to other Super Premium diets. But that’s all right since these grains are considered as some of the healthiest. Brown rice, for example, is low in fat but high in protein and fiber. Barley is much the same, while oatmeal contains a healthy amount of vitamin B and omega-6 fatty acids

The grains are essential in this diet because they provide some carbs to keep your dog lively, and they also contribute a significant amount of fiber. Usually, dog foods will contain around 2%-5% of fiber.

But a high amount of fiber (for this recipe, it’s 13%) or overweight dogs is excellent for managing their weight. The fiber makes them feel full even when given a low-calorie meal.

And since fiber can slow digestion, it can keep blood sugar from spiking. (Overweight dogs are more prone to diabetes.) The fiber reduces the risk of fluctuations in blood sugar and helps dogs better manage the disease.

You can also find fresh fruits and vegetables here in the form of apples, carrots, and cranberries. Added vitamins and minerals supplement the nutrients naturally found in the whole ingredients.

This diet supports a healthy lifestyle for dogs who are prone to putting on the pounds. It has key nutrients that support everything from your dog’s nose to his tail. For example, It contains chondroitin and glucosamine to support bones and joints that might be stressed from the pressure that a dog’s extra weight puts on them.

There are probiotics (beneficial bacteria) and prebiotics (food for beneficial bacteria) to help your dog develop a healthy digestive system that is essential to maintaining a good weight. And lastly, it has the right levels of antioxidants and nutrients to keep your dog’s body working properly.

Each cup of food only contains 275b calories to aid your dog in returning to a lean and peak body condition.

Kirkland Signature’s Nature’s Domain range contains fresh wholesome foods that are meat-based. Unlike the Super Premium range, the Nature’s Domain line features other animal meats aside from chicken and no grains, although some recipes still contain chicken. For this recipe, the main animal ingredient is turkey.

Turkey meal leads the list of ingredients for good quality protein. Turkey is easy to digest and highly palatable. And in meal form (when raw turkey is dried to remove most of the moisture), it contains much larger quantities of protein when compared to fresh. The peas in the recipe offer further support as plant-based proteins.

There are no grains in this formula. Instead, the brand uses sweet potatoes and potatoes to provide the carbohydrate content. Sweet potatoes are also full of beta-carotene (an antioxidant), vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin B6, calcium, iron, and potassium, just to name a few. And both sweet potatoes and potatoes are excellent sources of fiber.

Why do so many dog foods also focus on fiber? Fiber helps form firm stools and aids with the regular elimination of waste. It can also help produce a healthy balance in your dog’s intestinal pH, inhibiting the growth of bad bacteria. Fiber is also extremely useful in managing weight and blood sugar spikes in dogs.

Since fat is a necessary part of a complete dog food diet, Kirkland put canola oil and salmon oil into the mixture. Canola oil may be a little controversial because it’s highly processed, but it does contain beneficial nutrients.

Salmon oil is much better since it is more natural and contains a lot of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, which are great for the skin, coat, heart, and immune system.

What can’t be sourced from natural ingredients, or if there aren’t enough of it, are supplemented instead, such as in the case of vitamins and minerals. Kirkland put enough key nutrients in this food to make it as healthy and complete as possible for adult dogs.

Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Turkey Meal & Sweet Potato offers a balanced and complete meal for the overall vitality and health of your adult pooches. It supports everything about your dog, from his hair to his digestive system.

Probiotics and prebiotics are present here to create a healthy environment in your dog’s digestive system. It is complete with antioxidants, omega fatty acids, and high-quality proteins.

The only thing we’re not loving so much is the canola oil. Don’t worry, it’s completely safe but it’s not quite as premium as the rest of the ingredients in the recipe. Overall, this is a good recipe for dogs that cannot eat grains.

6. Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain Salmon & Sweet Potato

Rating: 4/5

First 5 ingredients: Salmon Meal, Sweet Potatoes, Peas, Potatoes, Canola Oil

Kirkland Dog Food (Cotsco): [year] Review, Recalls & Coupons 14

Guaranteed Analysis:

Crude Protein 24%
Crude Fat 14%
Crude Fiber 3%

Nature’s Domain Salmon & Sweet Potato is crafted for dogs of all ages, from little pups to senior pooches. As its name suggests, salmon is the main animal ingredient in the meal. It’s a great choice to get a good amount of natural fatty acids, since salmon is a fatty fish that’s rich in omega-3s.

Omega-3s are fatty acids that are responsible for those lustrous coats and hair of dogs. These are also great at reducing inflammation or itching, supporting the immune system, and generally keeping your dog’s skin healthy.

Salmon meal by itself is already a good source of protein, but the addition of ocean fish meal lends more animal protein to the food. And since a good amount of protein is needed to develop lean muscles, more protein via plant-based ingredients (peas, pea protein) happily raises up the levels to 24%.

Fiber and carbohydrates are essentials in dog food, and in this meal, these nutrients come from sweet potatoes, potatoes, and potato fibre. Carbohydrates are quick sources of energy (protein takes a bit longer to break down), while fiber keeps the digestive system functioning properly. Fiber is also essential for bulking up stools so that waste is eliminated regularly.

Canola oil provides the main fat content in the recipe. While some people believe that canola oil is toxic for dogs, years of research have shown it to be safe. It is true, however, that canola oil is highly processed and refined, much more so than other types of oils. Most types of this oil are chemically extracted using a solvent called hexane.

On the other hand, canola is rich in omega-9 fatty acids, has a good amount of omega-6s, and contains omega-3s. It’s also a good source of vitamin E and vitamin K. It has also been reported to lower cholesterol and improve weight control in animals.

If natural is important to you, then canola oil obviously isn’t a good choice. But, it does come with significant benefits to the body too. It might be good to weigh all the pros and cons completely.

When it comes to taste and your dog’s overall health, this recipe ticks most of the boxes. It contains all the nutrition your canine needs to live a long and healthy life. There are plenty of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and fatty acids here to keep your pet looking and feeling his best.

We like the inclusion of flaxseed, which is a natural source of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids; of yucca schidigera, which reduces waste odors; and of dried chicory root, which is a prebiotic that feeds the beneficial bacteria in the gut.

However, we’d prefer a better oil than canola. While it is true that canola oil provides a significant amount of benefits, there are other more natural and less processed oils that can give the same benefits. For example, fish oils and coconut oil are some of the healthiest.

7. Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain Organic Chicken & Pea

Rating: 4.5/5

First 5 ingredients: Organic chicken, organic peas, organic lentils, organic garbanzo beans, organic sweet potatoes

Kirkland Dog Food (Cotsco): [year] Review, Recalls & Coupons 15

Guaranteed Analysis:

Crude Protein 22%
Crude Fat 12%
Crude Fiber 5.5%

This Nature’s Domain recipe is crafted for adult dogs and made with premium and organic ingredients. What is organic? Simply put, it is anything that is grown or farmed without using synthetic materials. It doesn’t use GMO-products, human-made fertilizers or pesticides, or growth regulators.

Organic chicken starts off the meal and provides it the most amount of protein. It’s the only animal-based ingredient in this recipe, because the rest of the primary ingredients are made up of vegetables.

Because protein is an essential requirement in any dog food, the protein content of the chicken is further supported by the presence of organic peas, organic lentils, and organic garbanzo beans.

Organic sweet potatoes and potatoes provide the carbohydrate content. Carbohydrates act as one of the energy sources of dogs, and they add a balance to protein-based diets.

And since carbs are more easily broken down than protein, they can provide canines with quick bursts of energy for short-term intense workouts and play.

Fat comes from organic canola oil and flaxseed. Flaxseed is high in fatty acids and is rich in omega-3s. It’s a nice addition to any dog meal because it’s also laden with magnesium and vitamin B1. Organic canola oil is also rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and it also contains omega-6s as well as vitamins E and K.

Now if you’ve read our previous reviews, you will find that canola oil is not among our favorite ingredients, although we do acknowledge all of its nutrition benefits. However, that goes for NON-ORGANIC canola oil. In this recipe, the brand uses only ORGANIC canola oil.

How are the two different? Organic canola oil is typically expressed without using chemical solvents, unlike non-organic canola oil, which uses hexane. Organic oil production does not allow the use of solvents.

Rather, the oil is expressed through physical means. So with organic canola oil, you get all the benefits of canola oil but through a healthier way.

This is an excellent recipe for pups that will excite their owners as well. We laud the use of natural and organic ingredients in this pet food, and it only shows that this recipe is committed to bringing only high-quality food to pets and pet owners alike.

The formulation offers a balanced diet that blends taste and nutrition quite well. There are no fruits or other greens here, though. Most are legumes, although the presence of dried kelp and supplemental vitamins and minerals provide increased nutrition levels.

This is probably the only one where we fully support the use of canola oil. Since organic canola oil is pressed using wholly non-synthetic means, your pet will get the full benefits of its nutrients without any worry on your part.

8. Kirkland Signature Nature's Domain Beef Meal & Sweet Potato

Rating: 4/5

First 5 ingredients: Beef Meal, Sweet Potatoes, Garbanzo Beans, Peas, Canola Oil

Kirkland Dog Food (Cotsco): [year] Review, Recalls & Coupons 16

Guaranteed Analysis:

Crude Protein 24%
Crude Fat 14%
Crude Fiber 5.5%

This grain-free pet food is carefully designed to meet all the nutritional requirements of dogs of all ages. It is crafted to bring adequate nutrition for the overall health and vitality of pets.

The recipe is led by beef meal, a more protein-dense form of meat. Compared to fresh beef, beef meal will always contain more protein per volume. Fresh beef contains around 75% water.

In the process called rendering, most of the water is removed, but many of the meat’s nutrients will remain. So a pound of fresh beef will always contain less protein than a pound of beef meal.

While most of the protein comes from animal meat, you can also find supporting plant-based proteins. Peas, garbanzo beans, tomato pomace, potato protein, and pea protein also contribute some amount of protein to help the food reach a total of 24%. What’s more these ingredients also contain fiber, vitamin A, folate, iron, thiamine, vitamin C, and so on.

The sweet potatoes provide the most amount of carbohydrates, although some come from the plant ingredients mentioned above. Why are carbs important? Carbs in dog food play many roles, but the main ones include giving dogs energy, for creating texture in the food, and providing canines with an adequate amount of fiber in their diet.

While fiber is not a required nutrient in pet food, you often see it in the guaranteed analysis label. And pet food manufacturers often place an emphasis on their food’s fiber content.

The reason for this is that fiber is extremely beneficial. It aids in weight control, reduces the risk of blood sugar spikes, keeps your pooch feeling full, and maintains colon health.

Canola oil and salmon oil provide the necessary oil/fat content of the food. While the canola may get some bad rep (not wholly undeserved, mind you), fish oils are one of the healthiest to give your pet.

Fish oils are often recommended by vets because these are high in EPA and DHA, two types of fatty acids that ease itchiness, flaking, and hot spots in dogs. The omega fatty acids also help soothe allergies, improve cognitive functions, and make coats looking healthy and shiny.

This Nature’s Domain recipe contains the right mixture of meat, veggies, fruits, and fat. We’d have given it our highest rating except for the fact that it uses canola oil.

Don’t get us wrong. There is no conclusive evidence yet to support that canola oil is harmful, and it does provide benefits such as lowering the amount of cholesterol absorbed by the body.

However, it is highly processed and refined. We will, of course, always prefer our pets to have ingredients in their food that are as natural and healthy as possible.

Nevertheless, this recipe seems good overall. It uses a quality protein source. It has plenty of antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals. It has prebiotics and probiotics. Lastly and unlike some

Nature’s Domain recipes, this one contains a nice helping of superfoods like raspberries and blueberries.

9. Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Turkey & Pea Stew for Dogs

Rating: 5/5 stars

Ingredients: Turkey and Pea Stew

Kirkland Dog Food (Cotsco): [year] Review, Recalls & Coupons 17

Guaranteed Analysis:

Crude Protein 8%
Crude Fat 5%
Moisture 82%

This Kirkland Signature Nature’s Domain Turkey & Pea Stew is formulated to meet the nutritional requirements for both puppies and adult dogs. It is a protein-rich formula made with digestible carbohydrates and plenty of healthy nutrients.

With turkey as the main ingredient, you can rest assured that this formula will be full of meat and natural meat flavor that your dog will find absolutely irresistible. It is also free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients as well as artificial additives.

As promised, the first ingredient in this stew for dogs recipe is fresh turkey. Fresh turkey is a high-quality ingredient and source of meat-rich protein, not to mention natural flavor.

In dry dog foods, fresh meats sometimes lose a significant portion of their volume during cooking but the turkey broth and vegetable broth in this formula helps to maintain the moisture content of the raw ingredients and of the product itself. Moisture is very important for your dog’s digestion and it helps to keep him hydrated as well.

Though turkey is the main source of protein in this formula, there are some other inclusions. Dried egg product is the only other animal source of protein, though there is some plant protein in the peas and agar-agar.

Peas are an energy-rich carbohydrate ingredient while also being both gluten-free and grain-free. You will also notice several fresh fruits and vegetables in this canned food.

These inclusions act as supplementary sources of dietary fiber as well as natural sources for key vitamins and minerals. There are some synthetic supplements to help fill in the nutritional gaps as well.

Overall, this recipe is a quality source of balanced nutrition for dogs in all life stages from puppy to adult dog. It features protein-rich turkey as the main ingredient with dried egg product for supplementary protein.

Cooked in both turkey broth and vegetable broth, this moisture-rich formula is also rich in natural flavor. For carbohydrates, this formula relies primarily on fresh peas, though there are other fruits and vegetables as well.

These ingredients provide supplementary fiber and they also act as natural sources for key vitamins and minerals. Synthetic supplements are still needed to balance out the nutritional content of this formula, though many of the minerals are chelated – this helps to make them more biologically valuable for your dog.

All in all, this Kirkland wet food is made up of high-quality ingredients with nothing that raises any red flags.

Kirkland Dog Food Recall List

Kirkland doesn’t provide a great deal of detail about where or how their products are made except to say that they are manufactured by Diamond Pet Foods in company-owned facilities. There is some mention of testing protocols for ingredients but if you really want details you’ll have to go to the Diamond Pet Foods website.

The fact that Kirkland is manufactured by a separate company is not necessarily a bad thing, but you should know that Diamond Pet Foods has an expansive history of recalls, some of which have affected the Kirkland brand in particular. Here are the details of those recalls:

  • In April 2007, the FDA issued a recall for Kirkland Signature Premium Dog 2-Flavor Variety Packs due to potential melamine contamination.
  • In May 2012, the FDA issued a recall for several Kirkland Signature pet food products due to potential salmonella contamination. This recall included several runs of Super Premium Adult Dog food, several Super Premium cat foods, and one Nature’s Domain recipe.
