Meet Under The Sun Dog Food

Under The Sun is Canidae’s grain-free dog food line, intended to offer dogs with allergies some relief and a chance at a normal life.

Canidae is well respected as a holistic, premium dog food, and Under The Sun is one of several issue-specific offerings from the company.

It uses premium ingredients to give your pet complete, dense nutrition and forgoes all the cheap fillers and artificial ingredients. It is slow-cooked in the company's test kitchens so that you know each recipe is the best Canidae can make.

Under The Sun dog food recipes are made from mostly single-animal protein sources supplemented with wholesome fruits and vegetables like carrots and blueberries for a mouthwatering, balanced diet.

To address the food sensitivity issues in some dogs, the company opted to do away with ingredients commonly associated with such issues, like potato, corn, wheat, soy, and chicken by-product meal. Instead, Canidae chose garbanzo beans, which are a healthier alternative as filler.

Let’s take a look at this brand to see if it could be the right food for your dog’s sensitivities via our in-depth Under the Sun Dog Food Reviews.

Behind the Brand

Canidae opened in 1996 and remains to this day a family-owned company. It has its own manufacturing facilities, where the manufacturers oversee the entire production process from start to finish to ensure that the high-quality standards of the company are met.

The owners also pride themselves on using only the top-quality ingredients in every product unit so you can be certain your dog gets the best meal.

Canidae’s foods are free of common fillers such as corn or soy that can cause allergic reactions and digestive issues. The foods never use artificial colors or flavors, which can encourage dogs to overeat. Leaving out grains may help particularly sensitive dogs regain control over digestion and relieve some itchiness.

As mentioned earlier, the company owns and manages the facility in which they manufacture the merchandise, so it's able to test ingredients on site.

It has also collaborated with more farms to find ways to alleviate common farming issues more naturally. Canidae encourages partner farms to move away from mass crops like corn and soy and make way for better farming habits.

The partner farms all use natural methods to keep soil healthy. They use natural compost and adopt a “no-tilling” policy.

They also use grazing animals to remove the weeds and minimize the use of chemical sprays on the fields. Furthermore, they're investing in robotics to help keep significant field issues in check before they become an issue.

Canidae sources its ingredients from credible and trustworthy suppliers from North America to guarantee that only top-rate quality goes into the products.

1. CANIDAE Under the Sun Lamb Recipe

First 5 Ingredients: Lamb Meal, Green Peas, Garbanzo Beans, Yellow Peas, Canola Oil

Rating: 3.9 out of 5 stars

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Under The Sun Dog Food Reviews, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 10
A meal that is very ideal for hypersensitive pets as it is made with a single animal protein source – lamb. This is also free from grains and is blended with farm grown veggies and fruits.

Under the Sun’s Lamb dry recipe suited for adult dogs is a delicious kibble made primarily of lamb meal, which is the single protein source, and enhanced with essential nutrients to make a balanced dog diet.

The formula uses real fruits and veggies to add crucial vitamins and minerals necessary to support your dog’s immune system and provide the building blocks for good health. It also uses probiotics for healthy digestion and omega fatty acids for healthy skin and coat.

This chow does not use cheap fillers, which may cause allergies, nor does it contain artificial flavorings or colorings, which entice dogs to overeat.

Packed with a high 25% protein and 11% fat, this meal is excellent for active and working dogs.

Lamb meal is the first main ingredient, which is processed lamb organs and residual meat. It provides for most of the protein and fat in this meal.

Lamb meals usually have higher contents of calcium than other meat meals. And lamb has a distinct taste that can be very attractive to canines.

Green peas and yellow peas are the second and fourth main ingredients respectively in this formula. Peas are high in vitamin A, vitamin K, and various B vitamins, as well as fibers, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. These vitamins and minerals are surely healthful for your dog’s vision, skin, digestion, immune system, nerves, and heart.

But peas can be an issue for dogs with kidney problems as they contain purines. So if your pup has kidney issues, it's not recommended to feed meals with pea ingredients.

Garbanzo beans or chickpeas are the third ingredients in the mix. Like green peas, these are also rich in fiber, carbs, and even protein, plus several vitamins.

These are complex carbohydrates that take more time to digest, therefore releasing energy over a longer time. They are also naturally low-glycemic and low in fat, which can allow dogs to remain fuller longer because of slower digestion.

Canola oil is the fifth ingredient in this meal. It's a more processed type of oil compared with other options like olive and coconut oil, which is why it's not so preferable.

But it should be safe for your pup's consumption. Fats and oils are also useful in a dog’s diet because they provide energy, improve palatability, and help in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Some of the other plant-based ingredients added to this recipe are parsley, pumpkin, green beans, carrots, cinnamon, and rosemary.

There are several reviews for this brand, with over 80 respondents, and over 60% highly satisfied with it. But almost 30% were unhappy.

The reactions are aplenty, with many saying their four-legged friends adored the flavor and didn't have any sensitivity issues. Some were happy with their dogs' stool.

On the negative side, the most common complaints were that the product was too crumbly, and the kibble was too small. Some claimed their pups vomited or had stomach trouble.

Overall, we find this lamb recipe an okay regular diet for adult dogs, especially those with food allergies. We find the ingredients to be good enough and the essential nutrients to be sufficient for a canine's good health.

We especially like the many varieties of fruits and veggies added to this recipe. The price is quite acceptable too, especially for a brand that's considered premium.

But we hope the company can address the “too crumbly” issue that has been mentioned many times in the comments section. And yes, we find the kibble a bit too small for medium and large-sized dogs.

2. CANIDAE Under the Sun Chicken Recipe

First 5 Ingredients: Chicken Meal, Green Peas, Garbanzo Beans, Yellow Peas, Chicken Fat

Rating: 3.8 out of 5 stars

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Under The Sun Dog Food Reviews, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 11
This is also another single animal protein formula, this time it's chicken. This kibble is fortified with taurine, healthy fats, antioxidants, probiotics, chondroitin and glucosamine for overall wellness.

Under the Sun’s Chicken dry kibble for adult dogs is another popular product in this line. With chicken meal as the single protein source, this formula is also enriched with several healthy nutrients.

The mix also includes real fruits and veggies for a balanced diet. It's also augmented with probiotics for healthy digestion and omega fatty acids for healthy skin and coat.

No cheap fillers and artificial ingredients are part of this food.

Powered with 25% protein and 11% fat, this meal is great for active and working dogs too.

Chicken meal is the first ingredient on the list. It's made of mostly chicken organs and by-products that are processed in high temperatures to remove the moisture and turned into powder form.

This powder becomes the main content of this kibble. Essential nutrients are added to the powder for a more balanced diet.

Green peas and yellow peas are some of the main ingredients for this recipe, which also serve as fillers. Peas are abundant with vitamins A, K, and various B's.

They are also a good source of fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. These are all vital for your dog’s vision, skin, digestion, immune system, nerves, and heart.

But peas can be an issue for dogs with kidney problems as they contain purines. So if your pup has kidney issues, it's not recommended to feed meals with pea ingredients.

Chickpeas are also among the top five ingredients in this formula. Packed with fiber, carbs, protein, and various vitamins, these legumes are complex carbohydrates that take more time to digest, therefore releasing energy over a longer time.

They are also naturally low-glycemic and low in fat, which can allow dogs to remain fuller longer because of slower digestion.

The fifth ingredient is chicken fat, which offers extra fatty acids among other healthy nutrients. It also improves the flavor of the meal.

Some of the other plant-based ingredients added to this recipe are green beans, butternut squash, tomatoes, sage, zucchini, apples, and carrots.

Chewy.com showed over 40 reviews for this meal, with more than half giving it the thumbs up. 85% said they would recommend it. Many are appeased with the recipe's quality and results in their dogs.

However, just like in the lamb recipe, there are many complaints about the product having too many crumbs and dust. Some feel they didn't get their money's worth because the meal was just too crumbly.

Like the lamb variant, we give this kibble a grade of 3.8 stars, which is decent. We think it's a good maintenance meal for adult dogs that don't have allergies to chicken.

The ingredients and the essential nutrients are quite competitive. The price is competitive as well for a premium brand. Again, we highly recommend to the company to check on the several reports of excessive crumbliness.

3. CANIDAE Under the Sun Whitefish Recipe

First 5 Ingredients: Whitefish Meal, Yellow Peas, Garbanzo Beans, Green Peas, Canola Oil

Rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Under The Sun Dog Food Reviews, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 12
Whitefish is the only animal protein in this formula, making it ideal for dogs with sensitivities. With added essential nutrients to give your pup a complete meal.

Under the Sun’s Whitefish dry kibble for adult dogs is one of the more likable in the company's roster. Whitefish meal is the single protein source for this mix, plus added essential nutrients for a complete meal.

Like the other variants of Under the Sun, this recipe features extra ingredients derived from mixed fruits and vegetables. No cheap fillers and artificial ingredients are part of this food. With 25% protein and 11% fat, this meal is ideal for active and working dogs too.

Whitefish meal is the first ingredient in the recipe. Made of mostly organs and residual meat of an unnamed whitefish, it's the single protein source for this formula.

The whitefish meal used could be any or combination of common whitefish from the ocean such as cod and bass.

Rich in proteins, fish also have an ample supply of the healthful Omega 3 fatty acids and various B vitamins, which are highly valuable to the canines' skin, coat, and nervous system.

And since whitefish is lean and low in calories, it's ideal for overweight dogs and older dogs. Fish-based recipes are also a good alternative for dogs with food allergies to beef or chicken-based meals.

Yellow and green peas are the main fillers for this kibble. Peas are plentiful of vitamins A, K, and various B's, plus fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. These are all necessary for your dog’s healthier vision, skin, digestion, immune system, nerves, and heart.

But peas can be an issue for dogs with kidney problems as they contain purines. So if your pup has kidney issues, it's not recommended to feed meals with pea ingredients.

Garbanzo beans or chickpeas are also among the main ingredients. Well-supplied with fiber, carbs, protein, and various vitamins, these beans are complex carbohydrates that take more time to digest, therefore releasing energy over a longer time. They are also naturally low-glycemic and low in fat, which can allow dogs to remain fuller longer because of slower digestion.

Canola oil is the fifth ingredient in this meal. Though not as well-liked as its more organic counterparts like coconut and olive oil, it's an acceptable ingredient for dog meals.

It's a more processed type of oil but it's generally safe for dog consumption. Fats and oils are welcome components in dog food because they provide energy, improve palatability, and aid in the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins.

Some of the other plant-based ingredients added to this recipe are pumpkin, sage, green beans, carrots, tomatoes, parsley, butternut squash, cinnamon, and rosemary.

Close to 90% of respondents at Chewy.com gave this recipe their high approval. The reviews mostly praised the kibble's savory flavor, excellent nutrition content, and great palatability. Some mentioned how this food resulted in better poops.

Some pet parents praised its digestibility. And there were those that thought it was perfect for dogs with food allergies. But there were also a few that weren't impressed. Surprisingly, nobody complained about crumbliness in this variant.

This fish formula is one of our favorites in the product line. We give it 4.2 stars out of 5.

It's a splendid maintenance meal for adult dogs, especially for those with food sensitivities. The ingredients and the essential nutrients are meritorious. And for a premium dog diet, we consider the price to be fair.

4. CANIDAE Under the Sun Large Breed Chicken Recipe

First 5 Ingredients: Chicken Meal, Garbanzo Beans, Green Peas, Yellow Peas, Chicken Fat

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Under The Sun Dog Food Reviews, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 13
The formula is reinforced with essential nutrients to achieve a more balanced diet suited for large canines. Filled with probiotics, antioxidants and Omegas too.

Under the Sun Large Breed Chicken Recipe is a kibble specially made for large breed dogs. Its single animal protein source is chicken meal, harvested from US farms.

The formula is reinforced with essential nutrients to achieve a more balanced diet suited for canines. It also includes real fruits and veggies for a healthier and tastier dog chow.

This product has no cheap fillers, which may cause allergies, nor does it contain artificial flavorings or colorings, which entice dogs to overeat.

Loaded with 25% protein and 11% fat, this meal is favorable to active and working large dogs.

Chicken meal is the first ingredient on the list. It's made of mostly chicken organs and by-products that are cooked in high temperatures and converted into a powder form that eventually comprises the kibble. It's normally fortified with vital nutrients too.

Chickpeas or garbanzo beans are the next on the ingredients list. Stuffed with fiber, carbs, protein, and various vitamins, these legumes are complex carbohydrates that take longer to digest, in effect releasing energy over an extended period.

They are also naturally low-glycemic and low in fat, which can allow dogs to remain fuller longer because of slower digestion.

Green peas and yellow peas are likewise part of the mix. Peas are compact with vitamins A, K, and various B's, plus fiber, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. These are all highly beneficial to your dog’s vision, skin, digestion, immune system, nerves, and heart.

But peas can be an issue for dogs with kidney problems as they contain purines. So if your pup has kidney issues, better do away with dog meals that contain peas.

The fifth ingredient is chicken fat, which provides the meal with fatty acids and other nutrients. It also complements the taste of the kibble.

Some of the other plant-based ingredients added to this recipe are carrots, green beans, butternut squash, tomatoes, sage, parsley, apples, blueberries, and pumpkin.

We found 14 reviews on Chewy.com, where half gave this diet the 5-stars. 4 respondents were not very pleased and think the kibble is too tiny for large dogs. They say it's more suited for small breeds.

One customer was ecstatic that his beloved pup didn't have allergic reactions with this food as opposed to other brands he tried. Some also think the price is acceptable.

Overall, we find this chicken recipe for large breeds moderately good. We like the mixture of ingredients in this recipe, even with chicken meal as the primary component.

The presence of several fruits and veggies made this kibble respectable. We find the price to be fair too, and lower than other brands in its class. Perhaps the only red mark would be the kibble size, which is a bit too small for large breed dogs.

5. Under the Sun Duck Canned Formula

First 5 Ingredients: Duck, Duck Broth, Turkey Broth, Turkey, Turkey Liver

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY

They're also a great source of B vitamins, potassium, and phosphorus, which are beneficial for the bones and teeth. Duck meat also has omega-3 fatty acids that can enhance the dog's coat. And, it's a great alternative for dogs with food allergies to beef or chicken.

Duck broth and turkey broth are the next main ingredients. The soup carries many nutrients that are beneficial for pups. It also helps in digestion and supports the immune system and joints. It also enhances the taste of the meal.

Turkey meat, like chicken, is lean and highly digestible, and high in protein. But like in chicken too, some dogs are allergic to turkey. So it's best to be observant of certain reactions after feeding your pup with turkey.

Turkey Liver is the fifth ingredient in this recipe. It's an abundant source of lean protein, and some vitamins and minerals like thiamine, manganese, vitamin A, vitamin C, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, folate, vitamin B12, iron, phosphorus, copper, selenium, and zinc.

This product got 16 reviews on Chewy.com, where only 2 were dissatisfied. 75% of respondents gave it the high 5-stars.

They liked the quality of the meal and said their dogs would rush to feast on it. One review said it's a great value for the dollar. Another review said it did not entice her furry pals, and it had no smell.

We give this duck pate a generous 4.2 stars. The recipe seems all right, with nutrient-rich and high-quality ingredients.

The broth looks quite delectable too. This wet meal could be mixed with dry kibble for the extra protein. We also find the price to be pretty competitive.

6. Under The Sun Lamb Canned Formula

First 5 Ingredients: Lamb, Vegetable Broth, Lamb Broth, Lamb Liver, Peas

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Under The Sun Dog Food Reviews, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 15
Features lamb as the primary ingredient for quality protein, plus lamb liver, making it a great supplement to your pooch's regular kibble. Proudly American made with uncompromising quality.

Under the Sun Grain-Free Lamb Canned Formula is a wet recipe in pate form, with lamb as the primary ingredient. With added vitamins and minerals, this meal is a great supplement to your pooch's regular kibble.

Suitable to all dog breeds, this should be a delectable dish for your furry loves. It has no grain or any cheap fillers too. Its protein and fat contents are 7% and 6% respectively.

Lamb is the first ingredient and main source of protein. Pet parents usually prefer lamb-based dog food because lambs are normally bred in a more natural environment than other farm animals. This helps improve the quality of the meat.

Lamb are often free to roam in huge spaces and feed on pasture. Lamb meat is rich in vitamins B12 and B3, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, selenium, and zinc.

But lamb has more fat than poultry and cattle, which makes it more suitable for active and working dogs, and inadvisable for older or overweight dogs.

Vegetable broth and lamb broth are included in the mix. The soups from the cooked vegetables and lambs naturally bear some of the nutrients from these ingredients. These enhance the recipe and also improve its taste.

Lamb liver is also part of the formula. It's a great source of protein and vitamin A, both very valuable nutrients for dogs.

Peas make up the fifth ingredient in this dog meal. Although mostly used as fillers, these are nonetheless rich in various vitamins and minerals including vitamins A and K, fiber, iron, and magnesium.

But peas contain purine, which may be harmful to dogs with kidney problems.

Only 2 out of the 12 reviews for this recipe are not encouraging. 75% of the respondents gave it the top 5-stars grade. Most of the reviews were one in saying that their four-legged pals loved this product.

They were also pleased with the quality ingredients, and that it's safe for food-sensitive pups. One pet parent however thought the smell was undesirable even for her pooch.

Overall, we give this canned lamb formula 4-stars. While we prefer the Duck variant to this meal, it still deserves our respect. The ingredients are top quality, and the nutrients are noteworthy.

This is a great supplement meal to your dog's regular dry diet. We believe most dogs will love its taste. However, we prefer that this is served alongside dry kibbles because the protein content is quite low. Its price is quite reasonable for a premium brand.

7. Under the Sun Chicken Canned Puppy Formula

It has lean meat and less fat, and contains some of the vital nutrients for the ideal growth of puppies, like vitamins B3 and B6, phosphorus, and selenium. Chicken is also a rich source of glucosamine, which helps keep the joints healthy.

Dried egg is also included in this mix as an additional source of protein and other nutrients. It is highly digestible and also contains antioxidants.

Peas are high in vitamin A, vitamin K, and various B vitamins, as well as fibers, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. These vitamins and minerals are surely healthful for your dog’s vision, skin, digestion, immune system, nerves, and heart.

Salmon oil is a great addition to the recipe and is one of the best types of fish oil. It's known to boost the dog's heart health, promote a shinier coat, reduce itchiness, help soothe allergies and joint pains.

It can even help strengthen the immune system and fight canine cancer. Fish oil is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, which are highly beneficial to the mind and body.

While we found less than 10 reviews for this puppy diet, 8 spoke highly of it. Most comments were reassuring. Some even thought the product was pretty economical. Two respondents claimed their young furry pals ignored the pate.

In summary, we find this grain free puppy recipe to be a fine meal for your puppies, even when we suggest mixing it with kibble for more protein and other essential nutrients.

The ingredients in this formula are quite impressive. And we believe your new fur babies will easily fall in love with the recipe. But since it has chicken, better to watch out for allergic reactions. The price is also competitive.

8. Under the Sun Food Tray with Salmon & Shrimp

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Under The Sun Dog Food Reviews, Recalls & Coupons for [year] 17

Chicken is a great source of protein and nutrients like vitamins B3 and B6, phosphorus, and selenium. Chicken is also a rich source of glucosamine, which helps keep the joints healthy.

Chicken liver is also part of the recipe, which provides extra protein, plus other healthy nutrients including selenium, niacin, thiamin, retinol, beta-carotene, and vitamins C and D.

Salmon is loaded with omega 3 fatty acids that reduce inflammation, and other healthy nutrients like vitamin B12 and selenium. They have softer flesh and tend to be lower in contaminants including heavy metals like mercury.

Dried peas are high in vitamin A, vitamin K, and various B vitamins, as well as fibers, iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. These vitamins and minerals are surely healthful for your dog’s vision, skin, digestion, immune system, nerves, and heart.

We found just 4 reviews for this product on Chewy.com. Of the four, only one comment was not positive. The other three pet parents were all praises for this meal, which they described as delicious.

In conclusion, we give this shrimp & salmon food tray a 4-star rating. We think this wet diet is both highly delicious and nutritious for your pups.

But we also think this should go along with dry kibble or other dog meals. The price is very reasonable, especially that the ingredients are prime.

Customer Reviews

Canidae has a strong and devoted following. Most of its loyal customers love their recipes and consistently give the brand a high rating of four stars or higher on several major online retailers' sites. Canidae’s foods are notable for their excellent quality and are frequently recommended by veterinarians.

Canidae is constantly on the list of top dog food manufacturers. Its products are normally found in veterinary clinics. The Under the Sun product line is created for dogs with food sensitivities as it does not include grains and cheap fillers in the recipes.

Under The Sun uses limited and/or single-source protein for its recipes to help pet owners easily identify the ingredients that cause allergies in their pets. It would have been much more difficult to figure this out with dog meals that have multiple protein sources.

Of course, even with the excellent reviews for Under the Sun formulas, there will always be some that are not fans. Some don’t think the flavors are good enough for their pets.

And, there is a good number of comments about the brand’s dry kibble being too small and crumbly. Because of this, some consumers don’t think the products are a good buy.

A few customers also claimed their pups had digestive issues after feeding on the meals, such as runny stools and irregular gas. It’s recommended to slowly transition the dog when shifting to a new diet in order to prevent such issues.

Positive

  • “I have been feeding my lab mix this food for over 2 years now… It is an excellent dog food and being grain free is an added bonus and is the main reason I feed it to her My sister even switched her “very picky” pup to this food and he loves it as well!” – Irishbella1, chewy.com

Negative

  • “I'm trying to find a food for my pup that is grain-free and without any traces of chicken. The food is not sitting well with his stomach, and I took ten days to transition food brands. He often has both normal and runny stool. I can tell he dislikes the food. He looks at me thinking, “Mom, this isn't appetizing”. I will be transitioning him to a different food and will not buy this brand for him again.” Curtis, chewy.com
