Behind the Brand

Sunshine Mills Inc. manufacturers Triumph dog food. The company has manufactured the healthy dog food for over 60 years. In 1949 in North Alabama, the family founders worked making feed for livestock.

Today you’ll find manufacturing plants all over the country making Triumph dog food, and their distribution spans the country and internationally. The goal of Sunshine Mills is to sell their food to 30 different countries.

The first thing we find impressive about Triumph dog food is that their first ingredient is always whole protein and none of their food contains any by-products. Triumph provides an excellent list of ingredients for all their foods.

Best Triumph Dog Food Recipes

We’ve discussed the different foods from the Triumph brand, but we haven’t gone into much detail. In this section, we’re picking apart every little aspect of the food to find out exactly what people like and don’t like about this brand.

Triumph Simply Six Limited Ingredient Lamb Meal

  • Overall: 4 out of 5
  • Ingredients: 4 out of 5
  • Flavor: 3 out of 5
  • Packaging: 4 out of 5
  • Price: 4 out of 5

The first food we’re looking at is from their line of limited ingredient foods. This type of food is typically geared towards dogs with food sensitivities because the fewer ingredients they put into their body, the less likely they are to have a bad reaction.

The company says their special formula uses six key ingredients with natural flavors and essential vitamins and minerals. The only protein they use is lamb meal that is easy to digest. The food contains no corn, soy, or wheat, so it’s the perfect limited diet dog dog food.

First 5 Ingredients:

Lamb meal, brown rice, peas, oatmeal, chicken fat

So, they use lamb meal as the only protein source, but there is chicken fat in the food. If your dog has a poultry allergy that could be enough to set them off, so you always want to read the ingredients before feeding your pups.

Nutrition Analysis:

  • 21% protein
  • 13% fat
  • 3.5% fiber

Now let’s look at their reputation online; this specific food has 17 reviews on Chewy totaling 4.2 stars out of 5. For us, anything over four stars is good especially because they don’t have a lot of reviews. Positive reviewers say the food helps with vomiting and diarrhea. Negative reviewers say their pups won’t eat it.

Triumph Grain-Free Turkey, Pea, and Sweet Potato

  • Overall: 4 out of 5
  • Ingredients: 4 out of 5
  • Flavor: 3 out of 5
  • Packaging: 4 out of 5
  • Price: 4 out of 5

The next food we’re looking at is a grain-free option from Triumph. The company says right on the bag that it’s healthy and holistic with no artificial colors or flavors. They say the food appeals to a dog’s natural ancestral instincts and cravings by using real meat and limited carbohydrates.

First 10 Ingredients:

Turkey, chicken meal, whole ground garbanzo beans, pea flour, sweet potato, chicken fat, potato starch, fish meal, tapioca flour, dried chicory root

We wanted to extend out to ten ingredients for this to show you that the food contains three different sources of protein and during our research, we discovered that could be some of the company’s issues with taste.

Many pet parents complain that their dogs will not eat the food because of the flavor and the smell which seems to be a problem across many of their lines of food.

Nutrition Analysis:

  • 25% protein
  • 15% fat
  • 3% fiber

Overall, they have 22 reviews with 4.2 stars out of 5 and an 86% reviewer recommendation. Most of the positive reviews say again that the food works well for dogs with sensitive stomachs, but they have issues with flavor and kibble size being too small.

Customer Reviews

Triumph has a solid reputation online, and most of their reviews are positive, but they do appear to have some issues with the flavor of their foods. There are many pet parents upset that their dogs do not like the taste of Triumph so let’s take a look at some real-life reviews from verified customers to get our feel for the company.

Positive

Really pleased with this dog food

  • My black lab has allergies, and her fur was dull, and she would itch and chew her fur until she had bald spots. So I switched her to Triumph grain free salmon and sweet potato dog food about 4 yrs. Ago and her skin and coat are beautiful, no more crazy itching and chewing of her fur. Her black coat is so shiny, and when you pet her, it feels like I use conditioner on her. She is just a new dog and feels better. Never smells like a dog just soft and shiny and I only bathe her once or twice a year. – Chewy Customer

Great Dog Food

  • The best thing about this food is my pups love it. It smells God awful, but they just love it! As a major bonus: absolutely no FARTS!! It’s easy on their tummies. Hair and skin look great – Chewy Customer

German Pointer

  • My dog after 2 yrs started having strange spells of a large amount of foam built up and having hard time vomiting. Was trying to eat everything even the carpet to get relief and sometimes vomiting yellow bile foam in the morning. Finally got so bad carried her to the doctor. She had skin allergy too by then with a fever. Finally found this without sweet potatoes and salmon. She is doing a lot better. Have tried other expensive brand but did not work. Simple Six have been a lifesaver for Lucy. – Chewy Customer

Negative

Makes dogs sick

  • I have three boxers. I tried to make a change from Royal Canine to this to save a little money. This was the worst mistake I have ever done when it comes to dog food choices. Never Again. My dogs tried it, and all of them kept getting sick. I tried added gravy, other soft food and there was NO Change. I am going back to Royal Canine NOW. They love the treats by Triumph, but they can’t stand the food. I am throwing out the rest of my dog food bags now. – Chewy Customer

Not working out for us.

  • The pieces are very small–even for my smallest dog. Of my three dogs, one is very hesitant to eat it and doesn’t finish his meal, and one runs away from it and doesn’t want to eat it–when she finally does, she doesn’t finish it. Their stools aren’t as good on this food either. – Chewy Customer

Affordable Premium Dog Food With One Problem

If your dog has issues with vomiting, diarrhea, and other food sensitivities you want to give Triumph a try. Many pet parents claim the food has completely transformed their pup and made a significant impact on their life.

Overall, the food has excellent ingredients, variety, and reputation but so many people say that their dogs won’t eat it. We wish the brand had more reviews so we could honestly find out if that’s a significant issue or just a sprig of bad luck.

In the end, Triumph makes a high-quality dog food product that appeals to sensitive dog bellies all over the country and beyond.
