Meet Tender and True Dog Food
In this comprehensive Tender and True dog food review, we break down the ingredients of some of the more popular recipes in the company's roster. Read on.
We care a lot about what we eat – what it's made of and where it came from. Some of us even care if our meal was once treated well before being humanely put down. But have we ever wondered about what we feed our furry friends?
We often see dry kibbles of different shapes and sizes with appetizing scents and probably delectable flavors. Or wet pate-formed recipes with chunks of meat.
But what comprises them? Are the ingredients body parts (or even by-products) of what was once an abused animal that lived in horrendous conditions? Or did they come from a well-treated, organic-fed, free-range animal that was eventually killed in the most humane manner?
Tender and True sets itself apart from most dog food manufacturers as being a company that also cares about the animals processed to become a meal.
Its products are among the first to use humanely processed ingredients, which are without a doubt of better quality than most commercially available ones.
The Nebraska-based company uses humane and sustainable protein sources along with all-natural ingredients. They want to be a company that cares for the environment and for the welfare of the animals that make up your dog’s food.
Tender and True claims to only use the best-quality and humanely processed ingredients for the dog meals, which we all hope to be true.

Behind the Brand
The inspiration for the company was when the owners wondered about the ingredients that composed their commercially processed foods.
And so in 2014, they created Tender and True, a dog food-making company that cares a lot about the welfare of protein sources – farm animals – before they are turned into meals.
The owners believe that by using ingredients from humane processes, their products become healthier options for dogs, and the company a better steward of the environment. Tender and True dog foods do not contain GMOs, antibiotics, artificial ingredients, or cheap fillers.
Tender and True is transparent about the sources of ingredients. Its meats are certified humanely raised, and the brand was one of the first to be labeled “USDA organic” in pet foods. Their fish recipes use only sustainably sourced fish from reputable suppliers to help alleviate some of the stress we put on our oceans.
The manufacturers fondly call their foods “farm to bowl,” which is a pretty accurate picture of what’s going on with the processing.
They source the ingredients from the most reputable farms and plants and build a good relationship with them to ensure a high standard of quality. They make sure these farms give their animals the best care.

1. Tender and True Organic Chicken and Liver Recipe
Rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars
First Five Ingredients:
- Organic Chicken
- Organic Chicken Meal
- Organic Tapioca Starch
- Organic Dried Pea
- Organic Chickpea
Guaranteed Analysis:
This Chicken & Liver Recipe is a humanely made, organic recipe in dry kibble form designed to help your dog look and feel its best. It uses balanced proteins and carbohydrates to give your dog all-day energy and each component of the food is certified organic.
The chickens used for the product are certified organic and humanely raised by US farmers. This product is also grain-free, and with no GMOs, antibiotics, or artificial preservatives. Pre and probiotics, as well as vitamins and minerals, encourage healthy digestion and a robust immune system.
It does use pea and potato ingredients, which may play a role in enlarged hearts for some pets prone to the condition. Talk to your vet beforehand if you think it may be an issue.
Otherwise, the food has plenty of quality ingredients and never anything cheap or unlabeled. Plus, you’re supporting a better company with a gentler impact on the environment and the world around it.
The packaging is also quite neat, with a resealable top to keep the kibble fresh. It is safe for all dog ages, sizes, and breeds.
The chicken meat used for this meal is certified organic and humanely bred as indicated earlier. This means that the quality of the main ingredients is surely top-rate.
Chicken is a rich source of protein and is mostly loved by canines. However, some dogs are allergic to chicken, so it's best to watch out for symptoms after serving the dog this product for a few days to a week.
Organic chicken meal is the second main ingredient in this recipe. That may sound contradictory considering that chicken meal is processed residual meat and organs that are cooked at high temperatures and turned into powder.
But the chicken body parts used to process the chicken meal came from free-range and humanely bred chickens, which are the best quality chickens.
Organic tapioca starch is also part of this mix as a filler. This particular filler is preferred by vets because it is a highly digestible carbohydrate and a good source of energy.
Tapioca has no added sugars or proteins. This ingredient is used to achieve the right shape, texture, and density of the kibble. Tapioca also has some resistant starch, which like fiber can help in better digestion in dogs. And since it has no protein, it is safe for dogs with sensitive stomachs and food allergies.
Organic dried peas are added to the recipe also as fillers. However, peas are also known to contain vitamins A, K, and B, and minerals including iron, zinc, potassium, and magnesium. They’re also rich in protein and high in fiber.
Likewise, peas have lutein, an antioxidant that's good for skin, heart, and eye health. Too much however may be offensive to dogs with kidney issues.
Organic chickpeas or garbanzo beans are the fifth on the ingredients list for this product, which are extra sources of protein, potassium, magnesium, folate, and fiber – all beneficial nutrients for dogs.
Tender & True's Organic Chicken & Liver Formula received very good reviews from customers. Close to 80% of respondents gave the product the 5-star rate. Many shared how their canine companions loved the kibble.
Some mentioned how their dogs stopped itching after switching to this brand. And some are happy with their pet's stool. But there are a few that said their furry loves didn't touch it. A good number of customers find the meal too pricey as well.
In conclusion, we find this chicken & liver formula to be an outstanding dry kibble for regular dog meals.
We particularly love that the company used organic ingredients for this recipe, including the chicken and chicken meal. We're especially delighted that the company uses humanely bred chicken for this product.
We think it has a well-balanced nutrient content ideal for the wellness of dogs. The use of all these organic ingredients however has certainly raised the price for this product, which only high-income pet owners can regularly afford.
2. Tender & True Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe
Rating: 4.2 out of 5 stars
First Five Ingredients:
- Chicken
- Chicken Meal
- Brown Rice
- Tapioca Starch
- Potato Starch
Guaranteed Analysis:
Tender & True Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe is a well-balanced diet of dry kibble for dogs of all breeds, sizes, and life stages.
The first ingredient is chicken, which is sourced from US farmers and certified humanely raised, with no antibiotics. Vitamins and minerals are added to the mix to achieve balanced nutrition. It's free from grain, corn, wheat, and artificial preservatives.
Though not certified organic, the chicken meat in this recipe is expected to be of excellent quality since it is sourced from USDA-graded farms, with certified humanely-bred chickens.
Chicken meat supplies most of the protein in this recipe. However, some dogs may be allergic to chicken, so it's best to watch out for symptoms after serving the dog this product for a few days to a week.
Chicken meal is the second main ingredient in this recipe. This ingredient comes from ground and dehydrated chicken meat and bones.
The company guarantees that it gets high-quality chicken meals for this product and that the chickens used are humanely raised.
Brown rice is the third main ingredient in this recipe. It's an abundant source of essential minerals including manganese, zinc, iron, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, potassium, and magnesium.
Plus it also packs some fiber, which is good for overweight dogs. Brown rice is an acceptable grain for dog food.
Tapioca starch is added as a filler. This type of starch is highly digestible and generous with carbs, without added sugars or proteins.
Potato starch is the fifth main ingredient, which is a generally better-accepted starch source for dog meals than grains. It also offers carbohydrates and helps in the digestibility and palatability of the kibble.
Reviews for this meal are generally positive, with an approval rate of over 90%. Many pet owners vouched for the high quality of this kibble, which their dogs reportedly love.
Some also are happy with the stool of their dogs after consuming this meal. There are a few comments about their dogs not loving it, although some admitted they have unusually picky dogs.
And while some complain about its high price, many are also glad that the manufacturers source the animal meat from certified humanely-raised farm animals.
Overall, we are satisfied with this recipe even when it pales in comparison to its organic counterpart in the company's product line.
Still, we are pleased to know that the company sources from USDA-grade farms that humanely breed their animals. This is always a huge plus for us.
This guarantees first-class quality ingredients. The nutrition content is also remarkable and highly recommended for canines. There is still however the issue with the price being too stiff.
3. Tender & True Organic Turkey & Liver Recipe
Rating: 4.6 out of 5 stars
First Five Ingredients:
- Organic Turkey
- Organic Chicken Meal
- Organic Tapioca Starch
- Organic Dried Peas
- Organic Chickpea
Guaranteed Analysis:
Tender & True Organic Turkey & Liver Recipe is a premium dog meal. It's a humanely made, organic recipe in dry kibble form designed to help your dog look and feel its best.
It contains balanced proteins and carbohydrates to give your dog all-day energy and each component of the food is certified organic.
Turkey is the main ingredient, and the birds used for the product are certified organic and humanely-raised by US farmers, and cage-free.
This product is also grain-free, and with no GMOs, antibiotics, or artificial preservatives. It's fortified with probiotics and other important nutrients to boost your dog's health.
It does use pea and potato ingredients, which some claim may play a role in enlarged hearts for some pets prone to the condition. While this has not been proven, you can always talk to your vet beforehand if you think it may be an issue.
Otherwise, the food has plenty of quality ingredients and never anything cheap or unlabeled. Plus, you’re supporting a better company with a gentler impact on the environment and the world around it.
The turkey meat used for this meal is certified organic and humanely bred as indicated earlier. Like chicken, turkey also offers lean, white meat that's a highly digestible protein source for dogs. Turkey is also a good alternative for dogs with food sensitivity issues with beef or chicken.
Organic chicken meal is the second main ingredient in this recipe, with ingredients sourced from high-standard poultry farms.
Organic tapioca starch is the main filler for this kibble, which is a highly digestible carbohydrate with no added sugars or proteins. This ingredient is used to achieve the right shape, texture, and density of the chow.
The fourth ingredient on the list is organic chickpeas or garbanzo beans, which add to the protein, potassium, magnesium, folate, and fiber contents.
Like its organic chicken counterpart, this recipe also got excellent reviews, with about 75% giving it the highest mark. Most pet owners are perky about the fact that the main ingredients are 100% organic. It gives them a great sense of gratification that they're feeding their beloved pets with the finest quality meals.
A few customers wished the kibble was a little bit larger. And some think this product is a bit over-hyped. Many agree however that this dog food is quite extravagant.
We give Turkey & Liver Recipe from Tender & True a high 4.6 rating, which means we find it to be a great meal for dogs.
The use of organic ingredients is the main consideration for the high rank. And of course, it gives us some relief that the birds used for the recipe were humanely treated.
The nutrient content is likewise highly commendable. But like the other Tender & True merchandise, there is always the issue of excessive pricing. Nonetheless, for customers that can afford it, we highly recommend this recipe.

- Whitefish
- Whitefish Meal
- Tapioca Starch
- Dried Potato

Whitefish is the first ingredient in the recipe, even when the specific fish is not indicated. It could be any type of whitefish from the ocean like bass, cod, pollack, or whiting.
Apart from its rich proteins, it also has essential Omega 3 fatty acids and various B vitamins, which are beneficial to the canines' skin, coat, and nervous system.
Whitefish meat is also low in calories and easy to digest. And it has selenium, which boosts the immune system. Dried potatoes are part of the recipe. Potatoes are high in potassium, which is vital for healthy blood pressure and may help in preventing cardiovascular diseases. They are also a great source of complex carbohydrates.
Tapioca starch is the main filler for this kibble, which is a highly digestible carbohydrate with no added sugars or proteins.
This dry kibble received some positive reviews, with some pet owners favoring it for their food-sensitive dogs. Several of them also commended the product for using sustainable fish. But one customer said her dogs preferred the turkey flavor.
It's 4.4 out of 5 for this Ocean Whitefish & Potato Recipe from Tender & True, which is pretty high.
We give a lot of credit for using sustainable sources of fish for the product. The ingredients should be of the highest quality.

Whiting fish meal is the second main ingredient in this chow, derived from processed whiting fish. This fish is a common dish for humans and is typically harvested from the Atlantic and Mediterranean seas.
Like most fish, whiting is a healthy source of lean protein and notably low in mercury, which is surely good news. It's also high in vitamin B, magnesium, and protein.
Next is dried sweet potato, which is a type of low-fat root vegetable. It's packed with valuable nutrients like carotenoids, vitamins C and A, plus antioxidants and phytochemicals. It certainly adds some mild sweetness to the kibble.

The other ingredients are superb as well. Plus, it is favorable for senior and overweight dogs and those with sensitivities to other protein sources. Although in the premium price category, this recipe should be an excellent choice for canines.
6. Tender & True Organic Chicken & Liver Canned Recipe
Rating: 4.1 out of 5 stars
First Five Ingredients:
- Organic Chicken
- Water Sufficient For Processing
- Organic Pea Flour
- Organic Chicken Liver
- Organic Chicken Heart
Guaranteed Analysis:
Tender & True Organic Chicken & Liver Canned Dog Food is a humane, organic recipe canned in pate form designed to help your dog look and feel its best.
It uses balanced proteins and carbohydrates to give your dog all-day energy and each component of the food is certified organic, with added pre and probiotics for optimal nutrition.
The chickens used for the product are certified organic and humanely raised by US farmers. This product is also grain-free, and with no GMOs, antibiotics, or artificial preservatives.

“Water Sufficient for Processing” is the second major component in this mix, which simply means the product contains water that's needed to process the wet meal. The amount of water put in it is just enough for the ideal texture of the pate.
Next is organic pea flour, which serves as a filler for the meal. Pea flour is a powder milled from roasted peas, which are abundant in iron, calcium, fiber, and even protein.
Chicken liver is a nutritious and delicious addition to this recipe, especially coming from organic sources. The liver is naturally high in protein, fat, and vitamin A.

We got some mixed reviews for this recipe. Though about 60% of respondents gave it their approval, a third of the reviews were quite gloomy.
Most of the complaints were about the smell, which the reviewers described as horrendous. But for those that liked it, they claim their pups licked the bowl clean.
In summary, we give this Organic Chicken & Liver canned food 4.1 out of 5 stars, which is still pretty commendable. Save for the charges of foul smell, the ingredients in this chow are quite impressive.
And with most of the ingredients being organic, this makes for a highly recommended meal for dogs. Also, for an organic mix, this product is reasonably priced.

Customer Reviews
Customers love that this dog food is just as humane as their own food choices. Tender and True makes it easier to know what’s in your dog's meals and certifies many of their ingredients to the highest standards.
Many long-time patrons are happy about the fact that the company has taken responsible steps in using ingredients only derived from humane and high-standard sources.
As a result, Tender and True brands commonly get four to five stars in most reviews on several online websites.
What Do People Like And Dislike About Tender And True Dog Food?
Knowing that your dog’s food is not only sustainable but uses humanely raised meat makes dog owners feel a whole lot better.
The company has been notable for being a pioneer in advocating the humane processing of farm animals for dog food. The ingredients they use are of the best quality. Their wet foods are great for encouraging pets to eat, and they also offer excellent nutrition for feeding alone.
The food is more expensive than the average kibble, but most customers feel that this expense is worth it. If you’re looking to upgrade to premium food, this could be an excellent option for knowing how you impact the environment and how foods treat the animals that go into the recipes.
One downside is that the recipes are mostly more expensive than the average diet. Many customers are not comfortable making the extra expense.
Others are concerned with the inclusion of peas and legumes in the recipes, which could have an adverse effect on the heart of some pets.
There could be a tentative link between those ingredients and Canine Dilated Cardiomyopathy. If your pet is a breed prone to this condition, you may want to discuss the options with your veterinarian.
As always, some dogs didn't like the taste of the kibble. It’s a bit expensive to buy and just have your dog reject it so you may want to start with one of the smaller bags to test it out.
Positive
- “I purchased this brand and several other high quality brands to see which food my dogs like the best and after several days of putting all the foods out in separate bowls this one was the winner. I also bought the canned food for an extra treat for them and they love it. The only draw back for me is its a higher priced kibble. I will continue using it and see if they tire of it after a few bags.” Minnie, chewy.com
Negative
- “I believe deeply in buying humanly raised meat products. For some reason my dog did not care for this product. Was hoping she would. Ingredients seem fine. Not sure why she just does not care for it. So I mixed with her other hard to find dog food. No adverse reactions. She remained healthy just didn't like the food. : (“ Roxi, chewy.com
