There are plenty of specialty recipes to choose from, all of which are made with real meat and other natural ingredients as well as healthy supplements like chelated minerals and added vitamins.
What many dog owners love about this brand, however, is its availability – you can find it in most grocery stores so you don’t have to make a separate trip.

Rachael Ray Dog Food Review
When it comes to this brand, there is a wide range out there. Many dog owners who buy this brand are very satisfied, though there are also a number of complaints.
Based on the quality of the ingredients alone, however, this brand seems to offer moderate quality, though there is certainly room for improvement. Keep reading to find our own reviews.
1. Nutrish Natural Chicken & Veggies Recipe
First 5 ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Soybean Meal, Grain Sorghum, Dried Peas
Protein: 23.0% min
Fat: 13.0% min
Fiber: 4.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Wholesome food is always a welcome sight when it comes to any pet food, but wholesome doesn’t mean bland. In the case of this recipe, it translates to a yummy balanced meal that dogs will wag tails for.
Most premium dog foods start their list with a meat ingredient to support a dog’s need for protein, and Nutrish’s formulation is no different. It begins with real farm-raised chicken followed by chicken meal to turn the protein content up.
The dried peas, which come third, also offer protein support as well as a good amount of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients are essential in heart health and preventing high blood pressure in aging canines.
Because plant protein has been on the rise in recent years, the use of soybean meal (fourth ingredient) has also become common. Plant protein isn’t bad, just as long as there is enough meat protein in the mix too. And since chicken is the foremost protein source in this recipe, it’s okay to add other protein plant sources.
Soybean meal is a preferred plant protein ingredient because of its high nutritional value. It does have an adverse reaction in some dogs who tend to be more flatulent than normal when served more than the recommended 5 to 15% inclusion in every meal.
Whole ground corn comes next followed by dried plain beet pulp. As a whole grain, corn can be difficult to digest. However, once corn is grounded, refined, or cooked, it becomes a highly digestible grain that’s full of the carbohydrates your dog uses as an energy source. Dried beet pulp also gives energy but also promotes colon health as a fiber source.
To give the meal high levels of linoleic acid (Omega-6), the brand also added chicken fat. It not only provides pets with essential fatty acids, but chicken fat can also make food taste better and more irresistible to your dog.
This dry dog food is designed to meet the nutrition needs of adult dogs of all sizes. It’s formulated without using by-products, wheat, wheat gluten, fillers, or anything artificial. The caloric content is low and may be ideal for dogs who are either on a diet or are not as active as others.
The protein can use a little more boosting, but it’s at a good enough level. We’d like to see a little more vegetable content and a little less grains, but this recipe is already a balanced and complete meal as it is.
2. Nutrish Natural Beef, Pea, & Brown Rice Recipe
First 5 ingredients:
Beef, Beef Meal, Soybean Meal, Whole Corn, Grain Sorghum
Protein: 25.0% min
Fat: 14.0% min
Fiber: 4.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Just as humans have a fondness for beef and anything red meat, dogs do too. A combination of the savory meat with wholesome vegetables and rice provide active dogs with plenty of energy fuel for their daily escapades.
Keeping in line with the Rachael Ray Nutrish promise of filling your dog’s bowl with protein-rich meals, this recipe begins with real meat as the first ingredient. The U.S. farm-raised beef supported by beef meal provides much of the protein in this formulation.
This meat is rich not only in protein but in Omega-3 as well, which can help your dog a lot with skin problems and help him maintain a beautiful coat. The meat is quickly followed by dried peas, soybean meal, and whole ground corn.
The dried peas and soybean meal are excellent sources of plant protein, which also boosts the content of that nutrient in the recipe. Dried peas also contribute isoflavones (powerful antioxidants), four minerals, and B-vitamins. Meanwhile, the ground corn gives a digestible source of energy.
Most dog foods contain a form of fat. In this instance, chicken fat was used to provide the essential fatty acids that your pet needs for growth and development. It also has Vitamin E and Omega-6 for immune support and skin and coat health.
To augment the vegetable content, the brand added dried beet pulp and dried carrots too. Beet pulp is what remains when you extract sugar from beets, and it’s full of fermentable fiber that helps keep the digestive system healthy. It provides bulk to stools to help them pass through quickly and gives energy to the cells that line the intestine.
The moisture level in this dry dog food is at a nice level, 2% more than most other dry dog foods (Nutrish or otherwise). The calories aren’t much, which can be good if you’re not looking to bulk up your canine. This can work best for dogs who are maintaining their current weight.
Fiber and fat levels are also looking good, but we do wish for more protein. We also like that prebiotics were included and that there are no artificial preservatives or flavorings in it. Overall, this dog food is an excellent choice for adult dogs.
3. Limited Ingredient Lamb Meal & Brown Rice
First 5 ingredients:
Lamb Meal, Brown Rice, Brewers Rice, Peas, Pearled Barley
Protein: 20.0% min
Fat: 13.0% min
Fiber: 4.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Pets with food sensitivities are better suited for dog foods with limited ingredients. These recipes make it easy for pet owners to quickly scan the list and identify which are possibly problematic ingredients for their dogs.
For this particular formulation, the recipe starts with lamb meal. A meat meal isn’t really all that different from fresh meat, except that it has way more protein and a very much reduced water content.
For example, more than half of fresh lamb is water content and only a small percentage of protein. But when it’s rendered (overcooking to remove the water content then baking the residue), you end up with a highly concentrated protein powder.
The resulting protein powder is called a meal. And it will contain drastically different content values, with protein making up the bulk of the content and water only a very small percentage. While some people think that lamb meal isn’t nutritious, it has more to do with the quality of meat you start out with rather than the rendering process.
The second and third ingredients are grains — brown rice and brewers rice. Ground rice is a highly digestible carb source that supports a healthy digestive system for canines. It’s gluten-free and can provide your dog with the energy he needs. Brewers rice, on the other hand, may be a little harder to digest than white rice, but it has much more nutrients than white rice.
The fourth ingredient, peas, also provide protein support and are a good source of calcium, magnesium, and potassium. These nutrients are vital for heart health and help prevent high blood pressure in aging dogs. Additionally, peas contribute isoflavones (potent antioxidants), four essential minerals, and B vitamins.
Fifth and sixth ingredients are chicken meal and chicken fat. Chicken meal boosts the protein content even more and gives the meal an enhanced taste from an organic source. While chicken fat provides the essential fatty acid content that supports beautiful skin and coat. It can also be turned into energy, adding yet another fuel source for active doggies.
This recipe is made for all adult dogs, from small to large breeds. We love the focus on providing only 9 key ingredients to make it more suitable for canines with food allergies.
However, we would prefer it if the animal protein was higher because at 20%, it falls below average for dry dog food. The caloric content is also low, but that can be a good thing if your dog is not trying to gain any more weight.
4. Nutrish Little Bites Small Breed Natural Real Chicken & Veggies
First 5 ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Soybean Meal, Whole Corn, Grain Sorghum
Protein: 26.0% min
Fat: 16.0% min
Fiber: 4.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: All Lifestages, Small Breeds
Petite doggos have their own small peculiar quirks that are just as unique as their nutrition needs. This Little Bites food range recognizes that small breed dogs need a more particular approach when it comes to their meals.
The range offers a complete nose-to-tail nutrition in the form of small kibbles fit for little mouths and teeth. It also has ingredients designed to target stress-prone little pooches to calm them down a bit.
Supporting the energy needs of little dogs, this recipe starts off with real chicken. It’s quickly followed by chicken meal — chicken that has been cooked and ground up until the moisture content has been completely gone — to boost up the protein content.
Many people mistakenly believe that chicken meal is not healthy. This is untrue. While some may be, not all are. It depends on the quality of the meat that was used.
Like with many of Nutrish’s dry dog food recipes, there are also dried peas in this mixture to give more protein. It’s also a pretty good source of zinc, potassium, iron, fiber, and magnesium that are all essential for the proper function of your pet’s immune system, heart, vision, skin, and more.
The recipe also relies on dried beet pulp, dried carrots, and dried cranberries to provide a fiber, vitamin, and mineral boost to your dog’s food, along with added supplemental nutrients to reach a complete and balanced meal.
Ground corn, soybean meal, brown rice, and corn gluten meal provide much-needed protein and carbs. These are healthy ingredients, although they can be common allergens for dogs and should therefore be taken with caution.
Canines with no food sensitivities to these, however, will thrive because these contain plenty of nutrients (particularly brown rice) including fiber, which is essential for digestive health.
While the fat content in this formulation is a little higher than the fat content on the others we have reviewed so far, it’s not considered high enough to cause a problem. Fat is beneficial and plays a role in many functions of a dog’s body, including serving as insulation, cushioning, and energy source.
Moisture is good at 10%, which is the average for most dry dog foods. The protein content can be a little higher, but it’s already a bit more than average. And the caloric content is at a good level for maintaining current weight in dogs.
5. Nutrish Bright Puppy Real Chicken & Brown Rice Recipe
First 5 ingredients:
Chicken, Chicken Meal, Brown Rice, Soybean Meal, Whole Corn
Protein: 28.0% min
Fat: 16.0% min
Fiber: 5.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: Puppy, All Breeds
Puppies need dog food that is specifically designed for growing bodies. The Bright Puppy Line targets developing muscles, brain, and heart for a strong and healthy body overall.
Because little pups need all the protein they can get to develop lean muscles and a strong heart, this chicken and brown rice recipe starts off with real U.S.-raised chicken that was slow roasted to lock in all the nutrients and flavor in. The chicken meal provides back up to the protein content.
Wholesome digestible veggies and fruits balance out the meal and provide a source of essential vitamins and minerals that are crucial to a growing pup’s brain and body functions.
For example, the peas, brown rice, carrots, and beet pulp support a healthy digestive system. (A canine’s digestive system is home to a large amount of immune cells. When their gut is healthy, they have beautiful skin and coat and a reduced susceptibility to diseases.)
Cranberries are considered as superfoods because they are loaded with Vitamin C, E, and other antioxidants. The Bright Puppy range added cranberries because these superfoods can help lower the risk of canines developing diabetes, gastrointestinal and heart diseases, and hypertension. They also lower the pH of urine, making the bladder a hostile environment to bacteria.
Since proper brain development is especially crucial in puppies, Nutrish made sure to add DHA to the recipe through the inclusion of fish meal. Docosahexaenoic acid or DHA not only plays a major role in the development of neural functions, but it is also important to the retinal and central nervous systems.
The protein here is at a good level. It’s high enough to provide active little pups with enough energy and muscle to go about their whole day of play. The fat, fiber, and moisture content are about average and will be enough for their daily requirements. There’s a bit more calories to be found here, but since little dogs are far more active than adult ones, they need this calorie boost.
Anyway, with their activities, puppies will likely burn through these calories in no time. We highly recommend this product for pups because it provides all the nutrient little ones need to grow healthy.
6. Nutrish Zero Grain Salmon & Sweet Potato
First 5 ingredients:
Salmon, Chicken Meal, Sweet Potato, Turkey Meal, Pea Starch
Protein: 26.0% min
Fat: 14.0% min
Fiber: 5.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Special Diet: Grain-free
This meal belongs to the Zero Grains product line so you can rest assured that it is completely grain-free. This formula features simple, natural ingredients like real salmon and wholesome vegetables as well as the ingredients needed to ensure complete and balanced nutrition.
It is free from grains, glutens, and fillers as well as by-products and artificial additives such as colors, flavors, and dyes.
This recipe starts off strong with fresh salmon as the first ingredient, supplemented with chicken meal and menhaden fish meal as concentrated sources of animal protein.
For carbohydrates, this formula contains sweet potatoes, dried peas, pea flour, and tapioca – all of these are highly digestible, though the pea ingredients may contribute to the protein content of the recipe.
Chicken fat is the primary source of fat in this recipe and a highly nutritious one at that. For supplements, this recipe contains chelated minerals as well as added vitamins.
This Zero Grain Salmon & Sweet Potato Dry Food Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for all life stages. Overall, this is a decent choice if you’re looking for a high-quality but affordable dog food product.
It contains plenty of animal protein as well as healthy animal fats, though it may be a little heavy on the plant protein from various pea ingredients. This recipe does well to include chelated minerals but could benefit from the addition of some probiotics. All in all, however, it is a good product.
7. Rachael Ray Nutrish Savory Lamb Stew
First 5 ingredients:
Chicken broth, Lamb, Dried Egg Product, Chicken, Egg White
Protein: 9.0% min
Fat: 5.0% min
Fiber: 2.0% max
Moisture: 78.0% max
Food Type: Wet, Chunks in Gravy
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Described as a delicious stew made with tender morsels of lamb, chunks of carrots, fresh spinach, and brown rice, this Nutrish Savory Lamb Stew Wet Food Recipe is both natural and healthy.
This formula is made with real lamb as the main ingredient, supplemented with fresh vegetables, brown rice, and beneficial supplements to ensure complete and balanced nutrition. It is completely free from corn, wheat, and soy as well as by-products and artificial additives.
Simply put, it’s a high-quality wet food product that will meet your dog’s nutritional needs and satisfy his cravings for meat. It starts with lamb broth as the first ingredient, followed by fresh lamb. It isn’t a problem that the meat ingredient isn’t listed first because it is fairly common for wet foods to list water or broth at the top of the list.
In addition to the quality lamb protein, this formula also contains supplementary sources of protein like eggs, chicken, and pea protein. The pea protein is a plant-based protein which, while not inherently dangerous, could have a significant impact on the total protein content of the product. Animal-based proteins are always preferable.
In terms of fat, this recipe seems to rely on the meat products to provide fat and the guaranteed analysis doesn’t mention the omega-3 or omega-6 fatty acid content. The remaining ingredients on the list consist of carbohydrates like tapioca and brown rice for energy, fiber, and nutrients as well as beneficial supplements.
This recipe does contain some chelated minerals which help to ensure optimal nutrient uptake. This Nutrish Savory Lamb Stew Wet Food Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.
Overall, it is a decent wet food recipe, though there are some areas in which it could be improved. It wouldn’t hurt to add more lamb so that it could be the first ingredient and the addition of an animal-based fat would be helpful as well.
Some dogs may be bothered by the grains in this recipe and it doesn’t contain any probiotics. The pea protein is a mild concern, as is the caramel color, though this recipe doesn’t raise any major red flags.
8. Nutrish Soup Bones Chicken & Veggie Chews
First 5 ingredients:
Wheat Flour, Glycerin, Rice Syrup, Potato Starch, Water
Protein: 13.5% min
Fat: 4.5% min
Fiber: 3.0% max
Moisture: 20.0% max
Food Type: Treats
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Hot soup on a rainy day? Perfect! But you can’t always make hot soup for your dogs, so the next best thing is to give them a savory treat that gives the same amount of comfort.
The Nutrish Soup Bones in Chicken & Veggies flavor are tasty snacks that are like soup bones without the accompanying danger of splintering. Inside the chewy ‘bones’ are meaty centers that will be the main prize.
These treats are suitable for dogs of all breeds and sizes, making it ideal for multiple-pet households. They’re composed mainly of wheat flour, which is a potent source of minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants such as Vitamin E, manganese, selenium, and folate. Wheat is actually a pretty good ingredient in foods as long as your dog has not developed any sensitivity to it.
There’s also potato starch in the formulation, which plays a role in the digestibility of food. The potato starch helps improve the absorption of dietary nutrients and is far more palatable than corn. It also acts as a binding agent, together with glycerin and wheat gluten, to help the biscuit form.
In the middle of the treats are savory meat made up of chicken and chicken meal. There are also dried peas to boost up the protein content from the two animal proteins; poultry fat to add flavor and as a source of linoleic acid; beet pulp for intestinal health; and carrots for eye health.
Since these are only meant to be fed as treats or snacks, the nutritional content seems about right. As long as you limit the amount of chews you feed to the recommended number, the tasty treats should not impact your dog’s weight and overall fitness.
9. Nutrish PEAK Open Range Recipe with Beef, Venison, & Lamb
First 5 ingredients:
Beef, Chicken Meal, Whole Dried Potato, Natural Pork Flavor, Tapioca
Protein: 30.0% min
Fat: 15.0% min
Fiber: 5.0% max
Moisture: 10.0% max
Food Type: Dry
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Special Diet: Grain-free
Dogs that need a little more protein in their diet will find their match in this recipe. It’s crafted to be as nutrient-dense as possible for canines that crave meals made of hearty meats — just like their wild ancestors. There are no grains, gluten, and fillers included.
The varied animal meat combination in this recipe is meant to provide canines with a protein-rich diet to build lean muscle mass and healthy organs.
The formulation begins with beef as the main source of animal protein and is supported by chicken meal, lamb meal, venison, and lamb as meat sources. These five bring the ratio of protein up to a high 30%, making it above average among dry dog foods.
These meats are balanced by the addition of veggies and fruits such as peas, potatoes, flaxseed, beet pulp, and cranberries. All of these ingredients contribute to bring enough fiber, mineral, and vitamin content that always-on-the-move doggos need daily.
The company also included Menhaden fish meal into the mixture. Menhaden fish are prized for their oil because these are high in Omega-3 and -6 fatty acids.
During the rendering process that removes most of the moisture from the fish to turn it into a meal, much of the oil is lost but most of the fat and protein will remain. These fat in turn will provide your dog with the amino acids he needs for repair, maintenance, and growth.
Because having a complete diet is essential for any pet, vitamin and mineral supplements such as Vitamin E, Vitamin A, Vitamin D3, and B12 were added into the mixture.
The PEAK Open Range so far offers the most protein content in all the Rachael Ray Nutrish dog foods we’ve reviewed. It’s a great diet for energetic dogs and a good alternative for canines that don’t tolerate grains or gluten. As a maintenance diet, it also does well with its 338 kcal per cup calorie content.
10. Nutrish Burger Bites
First 5 ingredients:
Beef, Dried Potatoes, Vegetable Glycerin, Sugar, Bison
Protein: 14.0% min
Fat: 10.0% min
Fiber: 3.0% max
Moisture: 30.0% max
Food Type: Treats
Best for: All Lifestages, All Breeds
Special Diet: Grain-free
If humans can enjoy burgers, dogs should be able to too. These Burger Bites gives dogs a taste of that yummy food without the problematic ingredients that fast food burgers usually have. These contain only natural food that’s free from artificial flavors, wheat, corn, meat by-products, and grains.
This savory treat is crafted using real farm-raised beef (number one ingredient) that’s given a smoky flavor guaranteed to make your dog come running whenever you open up a bag. Bison provides additional protein support and enhanced flavor designed to entice red meat lovers.
The list of ingredients is blissfully short — a bonus if your dog is sensitive to some foods. You can easily scan the list and check whether they’re all safe for your pup.
Dried potatoes serve as a source of carbohydrates for your pup’s energy needs. There’s also vegetable glycerin, which you might wonder about. It’s perfectly safe and there to act as a binder and as a food preservative to fight against mold. The rest of the ingredients are mostly natural preservatives to keep the Burger Bites as fresh as possible.
While we like the nutrition content of these treats (the protein is at a high level for a snack), we have a misgivings at the inclusion of sugar in the food. Sugar changes the texture of a food and makes it more palatable. It also acts as a preservative.
All good things. However, sugar can also make dogs addicted to that particular brand of food and cause teeth problems when given regularly.
As a caution, make sure to limit giving these treats to your pets. Do remember that it’s not intended as a full meal but rather as a supplement that’s supposed to be given only occasionally.
Made in the USA?
As a brand manufactured by Ainsworth Pet Nutrition, a company based in Meadville, PA, Nutrish is a brand of dog food made in the USA.
The company was founded more than 75 years ago by George Ainsworth Lang who set out to create the safest, highest quality pet foods on the market while still offering them at affordable prices.
If you check the package for any recipe you’ll find a stamp that reads, “Prepared in American Facilities with Safe, Quality Ingredients” – this is further proof that this brand is indeed made in the United States.
Ingredient Sourcing
Though this brand of dog food is definitely made in the United States, the Ainsworth Pet Nutrition company is not quite so transparent about the sourcing of their ingredients. The brand website notes that each recipe contains real meat plus wholesome grains and veggies as well as vitamins and minerals.
They also state that each recipe is free from by-products and artificial additives – they even have an ingredient glossary on their site. If you click on the individual ingredients, you’ll find that some of them stat that they are sourced in the U.S., but there are many that don’t provide any information about sourcing.
As a U.S.-based company, it is safe to assume that many of Ainsworth Pet Nutrition’s ingredients are sourced in the United States, but it is possible that some are sourced overseas.
Recall History
The Ainsworth Pet Nutrition company states that they are deeply committed to ensuring the safety and quality of their products. Even so, accidents happen and even the best pet food companies sometimes have a recall. Fortunately, there is only one recall in brand history and none affecting their dog food products. Here is an overview of all the Rachael Ray recalls in recent history:
- In June 2015, the FDA issued a recall for five wet cat food recipes as well as two variety packs that included some of the affected products. This recall was issued due to potentially elevated levels of Vitamin D and it did not affect any dog food products.
One of the main benefits of this brand is its affordability. The brand states that it is their goal to provide pet store quality at grocery store prices, making their products accessible for pet owners on a budget.
Though this brand is very affordable already, you can save even more with Rachael Ray dog food coupons that you can find online or from individual retailers. You may also be able to find Rachael Ray coupons on the company website from time to time.
How Expensive Are Their Products?
The Rachael Ray brand of pet food is by no means expensive – in fact, it is designed for affordability and can be found in many local grocery stores.
For a 28-pound bag of dry food, you will spend less than $30 for most of the original recipes, though the Zero Grain and Peak formulas may cost a little more. For 8-ounce tubs of wet food, you’ll pay about $15 for a case of 8 which averages to about $1.87 per tub.
