Precise Dog Food Reviews
For the most part, Precise reviews are positive, though the quality does seem to vary from one formula to another.
It is a good thing to see that all of the brand’s products feature a high-quality source of animal protein as the main ingredient, though some recipes appear to be fairly carbohydrate-heavy.
On the whole, however, this brand offers a selection of high-quality, nutritious pet food products that are designed to nourish dogs in all life stages and from all breed sizes.
The brand claims that their products are the same foods they feed their own pets. Keep reading to find our Precise dog food reviews for one dry food and one wet food formula.
1. Precise Naturals Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula Dry
This Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula dry food is one of the brand’s newer formulas and it was designed to offer pet parents an alternative diet to help address issues with obesity, allergies, and digestive problems.
In addition to being gluten-free and grain-free, this recipe doesn’t contain common animal proteins like chicken or fish – it is made with protein-rich lamb meal with supplemental protein from garbanzo beans and yellow peas.
This recipe is all-natural and supplemented with the vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients needed to ensure complete and balanced nutrition. Simply put, it is just what your dog needs to encourage “boundless energy and a healthy exuberance.”
As promised, the first ingredient in this recipe is lamb meal. What is important to note here is that the word “meal” is not a bad thing – it actually bodes well for this recipe.
While fresh meats like lamb contain up to 70% moisture by volume, meat meals have already been cooked down to 10% and they may contain as much as 300% more protein by volume than fresh meats.
Though lamb meal is a concentrated source of animal protein, it is one of only two that are listed – the second is fresh lamb which appears in the fifth ingredient slot. Fresh lamb is also a good source of protein, but it comes after two plant-based ingredients, both of which contain a significant amount of protein.
It is difficult to determine how much the garbanzo beans and yellow pea flour contribute in terms of protein.
In addition to offering supplemental protein, the garbanzo beans and yellow pea flour act as the primary sources of carbohydrate in this Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula dry food. These are gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates and both are considered highly digestible for most dogs.
In addition to carbohydrate energy, these ingredients also offer some dietary fiber. There are several supplementary sources of fiber as well, such as yellow pea starch, beet pulp, and flaxseed.
There seem to be a large number of plant-based ingredients used in this recipe, but the crude fiber content is only 3.5% which is well within the recommended 5% maximum.
The remaining ingredients in this Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula dry food consist of fats, natural flavors, and supplements. The main source of fat in this formula is chicken fat, a highly nutritious ingredient and an excellent source of concentrated energy for dogs.
This ingredient is supplemented with sunflower oil, flaxseed, and menhaden fish oil, all of which work together to provide a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. For supplements, this recipe includes synthetic vitamins, chelated minerals, and dried fermentation products.
Chelated minerals are those that have been chemically bound to protein molecules which makes them more biologically valuable for your dog. Dried fermentation products are probiotics that support your dog’s healthy and regular digestion.
This Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula dry food has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 25%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 12%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 3.5%
- Moisture (Max) – 10%
- Calcium (Min) – 1.45%
- Phosphorus (Min) – 1.1%
- Omega-3 Fatty Acids (Min) – 0.5%
- Omega-6 Fatty Acids (Min) – 2.5%
- Calorie Content – 3,450 kcal/kg (391 kcal/cup)
This Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula dry food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.
Dry Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Overall, this Grain-Free Lamb Meal Formula dry food is a quality source of nutrition for dogs in all life stages. It starts off strong with lamb meal as a concentrated source of animal protein, though it seems likely that the recipe includes a fair bit of plant protein as well.
Plant proteins are less biologically valuable for your dog and it is unclear just how much of the 25% crude protein comes from plant-based sources. With gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates like garbanzo beans and yellow pea flour, this formula offers good digestibility and plenty of dietary fiber, though not enough to reach the 5% recommended maximum.
This formula is loaded with healthy animal fats with plant oils to ensure the right balance of omega fatty acids and there are plenty of healthy supplements. This recipe could be improved with more animal protein and with the addition of some fresh fruits and vegetables as natural sources for key nutrients.
All in all, however, it is a quality product and would be a great choice for your dog, especially if he has food allergies or digestion problems.
2. Precise Holistic Complete Grain-Free Chicken with Vegetables Canned
This Holistic Complete Grain-Free Chicken with Vegetables canned food is one of five grain-free wet food recipes that this brand has to offer. As part of the Holistic Complete line, you can expect this product to be formulated in keeping with a holistic approach to pet nutrition.
This generally means that the ingredients are carefully chosen to provide specific nutritional benefits and that the product as a whole will support your dog’s total body health and wellness.
This particular recipe features fresh chicken as the main source of protein with grain-free carbohydrates like potato starch and peas. It is formulated for puppies as well as adult dogs and loaded with natural flavor.
The first ingredient in this Holistic Complete Grain-Free Chicken with Vegetables canned food is chicken broth. While this ingredient doesn’t provide any nutritional value, it helps to keep the moisture content of the product high and it provides natural flavor.
Chicken is the main ingredient and the primary source of protein, though it is supplemented with chicken liver and dried egg product. Fresh chicken is an excellent ingredient and while it contains as much as 70% moisture by volume, that isn’t a problem for this recipe because the finished product contains 82% moisture.
The chicken liver acts not only as a supplementary source of protein, but it also provides some dietary fat as well as essential nutrients.
The main carbohydrates in this recipe are potato starch, peas, and carrots. All of these are gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates – they are also considered highly digestible for most dogs. In addition to providing carbohydrate energy, these ingredients contribute dietary fiber as well as essential vitamins and minerals.
Guar gum is used as a thickener but also provides supplementary fiber, as does the dried tomato and dried blueberry that appear at the end of the list.
The remaining ingredients consist primarily of natural flavors, chelated minerals, and vitamins supplements. There are no probiotics to speak of but there are some herbs and extracts for flavor.
This Holistic Complete Grain-Free Chicken with Vegetables canned food has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:
- Crude Protein (Min) – 8%
- Crude Fat (Min) – 4.5%
- Crude Fiber (Max) – 1%
- Moisture (Max) – 82%
- Calorie Content – 878 kcal/kg (329 kcal/can)
This Holistic Complete Grain-Free Chicken with Vegetables canned food is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance.
Wet Rating: 4.5/5 Stars
Overall, this Holistic Complete Grain-Free Chicken with Vegetables canned food is an excellent source of complete and balanced nutrition for puppies as well as adult dogs. This recipe starts off strong with fresh chicken as the primary protein, though chicken broth is technically the first ingredient – this is common with canned pet foods.
With three grain-free and gluten-free carbohydrates coming next in this list, this product is highly digestible and an excellent source of dietary fiber. It is also a benefit that this recipe includes several fresh and dried fruits and vegetables.
Not only do these ingredients provide supplementary fiber, but they also act as natural sources for essential vitamins and minerals. The recipe still requires synthetic supplements for balance, but the minerals are chelated which helps to improve their absorption.
Where this recipe could be improved would be with the addition of an animal-based fat and dried fermentation products for probiotic support.
Ingredient Sourcing
The Precise Pet Products brand seeks to provide pet owners with safe, high-quality and nutritious pet foods made with trustworthy ingredients. The brand claims that all of their dry foods offer “unsurpassed quality” and they lab-test all of their ingredients to ensure that they are both safe and nutritious.
The brand does not, however, provide any specific information about where they source their ingredients. As a US-based company, it is safe to assume that many, if not all, of the brand’s ingredients are also sourced in the United States, but there are no guarantees that some of their ingredients don’t come from other countries.
Precise Recall History List
This brand takes the quality and safety of their products very seriously. Not only do they design and manufacture all of their products in-house, but they have a strict quality assurance program and every product is lab-tested prior to sale.
The brand also offers a money-back guarantee which is printed on the label for all of their pet food products. All of this information combined should be enough to convince you that this brand means what they say when they say they are committed to quality. It also doesn’t hurt that there are no Precise recalls to report.
How Expensive Are Their Products?
Because their products are made with natural ingredients, Precise pet foods are a little more expensive than the average kibble – they are not, however, the most expensive brand on the market. You can save money on this brand using Precise coupons that you can find online or from independent retailers.
When shopping online, a 30- to 40-pound bag of Naturals dry food will cost you about $45 to $85 while a 30-pound bag of Holistic Complete will cost around $40 to $60 – the grain-free versions of both product lines are a little more expensive.
Wet food formulas come in 13.2-ounce cans and a pack of 12 will cost you between $25 and $50, depending on the recipe – that averages to $3.12 per can.
List of Current Products Available
When it comes to their dog food products, Precise offers four separate product lines. Technically you could call it two product lines, each with a grain-free version. The Naturals product line features the brand’s original lineup but it has been updated with new packaging and enhanced formulas.
The Naturals Grain-Free line offers the same great products but without the grains. The Holistic Complete line is made with the brand’s Life Circle Essentials, a combination of ingredients guaranteed to provide exceptional nutrition. There is also a grain-free spin-off of the Holistic Complete line.
