Who Makes Nature’s Recipe Dog Food?

The Nature’s Recipe brand of dog food is produced and manufactured by Big Heart Pet Brands. Nature’s Variety was founded more than thirty years ago by Jeff Bennet who was also the founder of Earth Elements, another pet food brand. There isn’t a great deal of information available regarding the history of Nature’s Recipe, however. Big Heart Pet Brands is part of the J.M. Smucker Company which produces a variety of other pet food brands including Milk-Bone, Natural Balance, Kibbles ‘n Bits, Pup-Peroni, Gravy Train, and Milo’s Kitchen.

Is Nature’s Recipe Made in the United States?

The Nature’s Recipe brand was only acquired by Big Heart Pet Brands, part of the J.M. Smucker Company, in 2015. According to a spokesperson for the Nature’s Variety brand, all of their dry dog food and dog treats are produced in U.S. facilities. While most of their wet food products are also made in the United States, some of their grain-free canned foods are made in Thailand.

Where Does Nature’s Recipe Get Their Ingredients?

Though Nature’s Recipe is a U.S.-based company, the brand’s manufacturer (J.M. Smucker Company) has operations around the world. Most of Nature’s Recipe’s dog food products are made in the United States, so it seems likely that most of their ingredients are sourced from the U.S. as well. The Nature’s Recipe website provides some detailed information about the quality and nutritional benefits for some of their main ingredients (like real salmon, wholesome grains, and garden quality vegetables) but they do not provide specific information about where any of these ingredients come from.

Nature’s Recipe Dog Food History

The Nature’s Recipe company follows the tagline, “Every ingredient counts” and they talk about promoting the health and wellness of pets with their products. They do not, however, provide much in the way of detailed information about their ingredients or their manufacturing processes. It is worth noting that Big Heart Pet Brands, the company that manufactures Nature’s Recipe products, also makes some low-quality pet food brands – maybe even in the same facilities as Nature’s Recipe products. All that we know for sure is that Nature’s Recipe has only been recalled once. Here are the details of that recall:

  • In October 2012, the Nature’s Recipe company issued a voluntary recall for 19-ounce pouches of Nature’s Recipe Oven Baked Biscuits with Real Chicken due to potential salmonella contamination.

Nature’s Recipe Dog Food Coupons 2019

You may also be able to find Nature’s Recipe dog food coupons from individual retailers.

Is Nature’s Recipe Dog Food Expensive?

The Nature’s Recipe brand of dog food appears to be a high-quality brand so you should be prepared to spend a little more on this brand than you would for the average kibble. Product prices vary from one recipe to another, but a 24-pound bag of Nature’ Recipe grain-free dry dog food will cost you between $40 and $75. Nature’s Recipe original formulas cost about $20 to $35 for a 15-pound bag and 24-pound bags of Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials limited ingredient dry food cost $45 to $67. Nature’s Recipe canned food comes in several different sizes. For a 24-pack of Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials canned food (10-ounce cans), you’ll pay $65 to $100. Nature’s Recipe Dog Food Reviews

When it comes to their ingredients, Nature’s Recipe uses real meats, protein-rich meat meals, wholesome grains, and fresh fruits and vegetables. All of Nature’s Recipe’s dog food products are designed to be easy to digest and balanced with healthy nutrients – they will also support your dog’s healthy skin and coat as well as a healthy bodyweight. Each recipe starts with a quality animal protein as the main ingredient (with the exception of a vegetarian formula), supplemented with whole grains or grain-free carbohydrates. Nature’s Recipe uses a careful blend of omega fatty acids for energy and healthy coat, plus plenty of digestible fiber for regular digestion.

Nature’s Recipe Dry Review: Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe

This Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe is a high-energy blend that is specially designed to be easy on your dog’s stomach and digestive system. Made with high-quality chicken protein and grain-free carbohydrates, this formula is complete and balanced for all life stages. Whether you have a growing puppy or an active adult dog, this formula will provide plenty of meat-rich protein, healthy fats, and digestible carbohydrates. It is also made with beneficial supplements to ensure nutritional balance.

The first ingredient in this formula is fresh chicken. One thing you should know is that fresh meats like chicken contain up to 80% moisture by volume. When the dog food is cooked and much of that moisture is lost, the final volume of protein contributed by that ingredient could be less. That isn’t a problem for this recipe, however, because chicken meal is the second ingredient. Chicken meal, and other meat meals, has already been cooked to remove moisture – that makes it a highly-concentrated source of protein. In addition to these two proteins, this Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe also contains pea protein. Unfortunately, this is a plan protein which means that it offers lower bioavailability for your dog. It is also unclear how much this ingredient contributes to the total protein content of the recipe.

For carbohydrates, this recipe relies primarily on garbanzo beans and peas – both gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates. In addition to carbohydrate energy, these ingredients contribute dietary fiber to boost your dog’s digestion. There are also some supplementary sources of fiber such as sweet potatoes, apples, pumpkin, tapioca starch, and tomato pomace.  The main source of fat used here is poultry fat which, though it is an animal-based fat, doesn’t come from a named source so it is difficult to judge the quality. The remaining ingredients in this formula consist of natural flavors and synthetic supplements, including chelated minerals.

This Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 27%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 12%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 4%
  • Moisture (Max) – 10%
  • Calcium (Min) – 1%
  • Phosphorus (Min) – 0.8%
  • Calorie Content – 3,550 kcal/kg (363 kcal/cup)

This Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for all life stages.

Nature’s Recipe Dry Food Rating: 3.5/5 stars

Overall, this Nature’s Recipe Grain-Free Easy to Digest Chicken, Sweet Potato & Pumpkin Recipe is a quality source of balanced nutrition for dogs in all life stages. This recipe starts off strong with chicken and chicken meal as the top two ingredients and it continues to do well with two gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates up next. The fourth ingredient, however, is a little troubling – pea protein is a plant-based ingredient and offers lower bioavailability than meat-based proteins. Some pet owners may also say that the tomato pomace used as a supplementary source of fiber is a questionable ingredient. It is also a little concerning that the main source of fat comes from an unnamed source. All in all, however, this is still a decent recipe with a little room for improvement.

Nature’s Recipe Canned Review: Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth

This Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth recipe is a limited ingredient recipe made with quality ingredients like fresh meat and wholesome fruits and veggies. This formula is loaded with healthy nutrients and natural flavor that even the pickiest of eaters won’t be able to resist. With carefully selected ingredients like savory sweet potatoes, real lamb, and fresh picked green beans, this formula delivers a healthy dose of nutrition that is gentle on your dog’s stomach and digestive system. This formula is particularly beneficial for dogs with food allergies and sensitivities.

The first ingredient in this formula is fresh lamb, a meat-rich and high-quality source of protein. Fresh meats like lamb contain up to 80% moisture by volume which can sometimes be a problem for dry foods – when the product is cooked and much of the moisture is lost, some of that volume may be reduced. However, this recipe includes chicken broth as the second ingredient and has an 82% moisture level, so that won’t be a problem – there is also fresh chicken as a supplementary source of protein. All in all, this Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth recipe contains 10% crude protein which translates to a dry matter basis of more than 90%.

The main carbohydrates used in this Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth recipe are sweet potatoes and green beans. These are gluten-free and grain-free carbohydrates that are considered highly digestible for dogs. Next comes tapioca starch which acts as a supplementary source of dietary fiber. Guar gum, though primarily used as a thickener, may add some fiber as well. The rest of the ingredients consist of healthy fats like sunflower oil and synthetic supplements for nutritional balance. There is also some parsley at the end of the list for added flavor and nutrition.

This Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth recipe has a guaranteed analysis as listed below:

  • Crude Protein (Min) – 10%
  • Crude Fat (Min) – 2.5%
  • Crude Fiber (Max) – 1.5%
  • Moisture (Max) – 82%

This Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth recipe is formulated to meet the nutritional levels established by the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles for growth and maintenance.

Nature’s Recipe Canned Food Rating: 4.5/5 stars

Overall, this Nature’s Recipe Pure Essentials Grain-Free Lamb in Broth recipe is a high-quality product and an excellent choice for dogs that suffer from food allergies or sensitivities. Not only is this formula rich in protein, but the fresh lamb that contributes most of that protein is a novel protein for many dogs. With sweet potatoes and green beans as the main carbohydrates, this formula is gluten-free and grain-free as well as being highly digestible. Sunflower oil is the main source of fat including omega-6 fatty acids. It would be better to see an animal fat used instead, but your dog will get some animal fat from the lamb and chicken. In terms of supplements, this formula is nutritionally balanced but it could be improved a little bit with the inclusion of some chelated minerals.

  • my dog is very picky but she loves the chicken and rice small bites the best . She has skin allergies and weight issues, so which flavor or blend would be the best for her. She is a mini-dachshund (dapple) and she sheds like I have never seen a dog shed. I think it is all allergy related. Thanks for ideas you can give me.

  • My two dogs loved this food, then the company went out looking for cheaper salmon to put in it and now the dog food is out of stock at the stores due to non-shipment with no date when it will be back in stock. Now I have to look for new food for my dogs and can’t wean them off as you should do! Very upset about this. Not to mention the price of non-stocked food has gone up $10.00/bag before they even get it back in stock, if ever.
My dogs loved this food and now they are without!
