1. Eagle Pack Original Chicken Meal & Pork Meal Recipe

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

First 5 ingredients: Chicken Meal, Pork Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Dehulled Barley, Oatmeal

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 8
Using a special blend of fats, proteins and carbohydrates for overall wellness. Plus it is also fortified with omega fatty acids, glucosamine and antioxidants for skin/coat health, joint health and boost the immune system.

This Chicken Meal & Pork Meal recipe is formulated for dogs of all life stages and made with high-quality, natural ingredients. This recipe features protein-rich chicken and pork meals as well as wholesome grains for a complete and balanced meal.

With additional nutritional support from flaxseed and healthy supplements, this formula will nourish your dog’s body from the inside out while also supporting his skin and coat health. This recipe is completely free from corn, wheat, and soy ingredients as well as artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives.

The first ingredient in this recipe is chicken meal and it is followed by pork meal. The word “meal” here is not a bad thing – it simply refers to meats that have been cooked to remove moisture.

Meat meals contain up to 300% more protein by volume than fresh meats because fresh meats contain up to 80% moisture. When the dog food is cooked and most of that moisture is lost, the volume of that protein will be much lower. These two sources of protein contribute to a total crude protein content of 26% which is well within the recommended range for dogs.

After the chicken and pork meals come the main sources of carbohydrate – ground brown rice, dehulled barley, oatmeal, rice, and peas. All of these carbohydrates are considered easily digestible for dogs and they contribute both usable energy and dietary fiber.

You should be aware, however, that some dogs may be sensitive to gluten-containing grains like barley or to grains in general. If your dog doesn’t have any food allergies or sensitivities, however, you have nothing to worry about.

This recipe also gets supplementary fiber from the flaxseed and tomato pomace. Overall, this recipe has a 4% crude fiber content which is great – anything under 5% is ideal for dogs. Having too little or too much fiber in your dog’s diet could be detrimental but 4% is great.

The remaining ingredients in this kibble consist primarily of fats, flavors, and supplements. The main source of fat used in this recipe is chicken fat – this is a highly nutritious ingredient and an excellent source of essential fatty acids.

The chicken fat works with the flaxseed to ensure a balance of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids to support your dog’s skin and coat. This recipe contains a number of synthetic supplements as well, including vitamins, chelated minerals, and dried fermentation products.

Chelated minerals are a great addition to any dog food because they have been chemically bound to protein molecules which improves their bioavailability for dogs. Dried fermentation products simply act as probiotics to support your dog’s healthy and regular digestion – this is a high-quality addition to this dry food recipe.

Overall, this recipe is an excellent source of balanced nutrition for dogs in all life stages. This recipe starts off strong with two protein-rich meat meals as the primary ingredients – they are supplemented by whole grains as well as some grain-free carbohydrates.

These ingredients are highly digestible for dogs and, unless your dog has food allergies or sensitivities, they are beneficial ingredients. This recipe meets your dog’s need for protein, fat, and fiber – plus it is free from corn, wheat and soy ingredients as well as artificial additives. All in all, this is a protein-rich recipe that offers complete and balanced nutrition for all dogs.

2. Eagle Pack Chicken & Pork Large & Giant Breed

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

First 5 ingredients: Chicken Meal, Pork Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Rice,

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 9
A unique formula cater to support the wellness of large breed dogs who weighs over 50 lbs., it has the right amount of carbs, fats and proteins. Furthermore, it contains glucosamine, antioxidants and healthy fats to enhance joint health/mobility and overall immunity.

You might think that all dog foods are the same, but that would be farthest from the truth. While there are some good ones that are crafted with complete nutrition for all kinds of breeds, dog food that targets specific breed sizes provides a better and more targeted approach to nutrition.

Eagle Pack’s dog food made specifically for large and giant breeds contain a special blend of ingredients that target the issues big dogs usually have. For example, larger canines usually need more support for their joints because they put more pressure on them. The addition of glucosamine in this recipe is therefore a huge plus.

Glucosamine is a natural substance that is particularly effective in reducing joint pain, inflammation, and wear. It is also excellent in increasing joint mobility. As a testament to its effectiveness, it is one of the most often-used joint and hip supplements for dogs.

Aside from glucosamine, protein is incredibly crucial. Large breed pups not only need to have their bones healthy, they also need to have enough healthy muscles to support their heavy bones. The protein content in their food provides this, which is why meat is highly recommended to be the first ingredient in any dog food formulation.

Because Eagle Pack recognizes how important protein is, the first and second ingredients are meat — chicken meal and pork meal, bringing the total protein to 25% minimum.

Meals are actually better than fresh meat when it comes to protein levels. Fresh meats are mostly made up of moisture, while meat meals have had most of that water content removed. So if you have one kg of fresh meat and one kg of meat meal, the kilo of meat meal will have more protein than the kilo of fresh meat.

Right after the animal proteins come grains (brown rice, oatmeal, and rice). Contrary to popular opinion, many veterinarians find grains helpful for dogs. Because dogs are omnivores, they don’t have to stick with a strictly meat diet.

It’s also a big plus that these grains are absolutely nutritious (full of vitamins and minerals), are sources of digestible carbohydrates, and provide plenty of fiber for good digestion.

We also have to commend the addition of numerous vitamins and minerals here, but most importantly, we like the inclusion of several probiotic strains. Probiotics are friendly microbes that help in the digestion of food, boost the immune system, fight off pathogens, and make nutrients.

Moreover, this recipe has a nice level of omega fatty acids that keep dogs’ skins looking healthy, their fur shiny and soft, and their immune system strong. Studies also suggest that omega fatty acids can be very helpful in treating canine kidney disease and arthritis.

Your big dogs will get a kick out of the combination of two yummy meat flavors that they love — chicken and pork. You’ll get a kick out of it too because you know that you’re feeding your pets not only flavorful meals but wholly nutritious ones too.

The grains provide a balance against the plentiful meat, and unless your dog suffers from grain sensitivity, he’ll actually benefit a lot from the inclusion of these. Overall, we like this healthy formulation and highly recommend this recipe to you.

3. Eagle Pack Lamb & Chicken Large & Giant Breed Puppy

Rating: 4/5 stars

First 5 ingredients: Lamb Meal, Oatmeal, Ground Brown Rice, Dehulled Barley, Rice

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 10
Specifically tailored for puppies who will weigh over 50 pounds as adults. It is carefully crafted with a special blend of proteins, fats and carbohydrates tailored to help your growing pup stay healthy and lean.

Red and white meat together? What an excellent combination! This Eagle Pack recipe combines two types of meats that dogs love — white meat in the form of chicken and red meat in the form of lamb. It’s a delicious combination that growing biggie pups will be begging you for.

Just like different breed sizes have different needs, pups also have different needs from adults. Since puppies have not reached peak growth yet, their bodies will be busy developing and growing, which will need a whole different set of nutrition than adults require.

Growing is tiring business so even if their bodies look little to you, they will be needing lots of nutrients to fuel the growth. The need for a more specific type of dog food is even more glaring when you factor in the breed size of these puppies. Large-breed puppies will, of course, be requiring even more nutrition than regular-sized ones.

Because pups’ brains haven’t fully developed yet, it’s vital that they get ample DHA to support it. DHA helps puppies to be as smart and as healthy as possible, and a healthy brain and cognitive development can lead to a more trainable puppy. Eagle Pack recognizes this need, and has therefore included this type of omega-3 fatty acid into the mixture.

During this crucial time, puppies will be needing nutrition to bolster their muscles and bones. Protein is incredibly essential for bone and muscle development. Since the first ingredient in any recipe is always the one that makes up the bulk, it’s a good thing that this recipe starts with an animal protein — lamb meal.

Lamb meal is a highly concentrated form of protein and it contains a good amount of calcium too (another essential nutrient for bone growth). The protein is further supplemented by the addition of chicken meal in the recipe, boosting the protein level even higher.

To balance all the meat, a collection of wholesome grain ingredients were added in. These include oatmeal, brown rice, barley, and white rice. Rice is often given to dogs with gastrointestinal upsets because these are gentle on the digestive system and easily digested, although the brown rice contains far more nutrition than the white.

Oatmeal is a great source of soluble fiber (contributing much to the 5% max fiber of this food), which helps regulate a canine’s bowel movements as well as his blood glucose levels. It is also loaded with B vitamins and minerals as well as a good amount of linoleic acid (an essential fatty acid that’s good for the skin).

Barley is a complex carbohydrate that is well-tolerated by canines. It’s high in fiber but low in cholesterol. Unless your puppy has a known allergy to grains, he will benefit a lot from the inclusion of grains in his meals. A totally grain-free diet isn’t any better when compared to one with grains in it. It is just the more viable solution for dogs with food sensitivities.

This unique formulation has enough nutrition packed into it to fully support all the needs of a growing large-breed puppy. There’s also a nice amount of probiotics here to make sure that his immune and digestive systems remain in excellent shape.

While we love and will recommend this recipe to dog owners, we also feel that this formulation might benefit more from the addition of veggies or fruits. As it is, there is only tomato pomace present. Overall, however, this recipe provides a nicely balanced diet that dogs will gain from.

4. Eagle Pack Reduced Fat Pork & Chicken Formula

Rating: 4.5/5

First 5 ingredients: Pork Meal, Dehulled Barley, Peas, Ground Brown Rice, Oatmeal

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 11
Especially made for pets who needs to shed a few pounds, this kibble contains the right amount od protein, fats and carbs to support weight loss. This is also ideal for less active/senior pets, don't worry it still contains all the essential nutrients they need.

Studies have shown that more than half of dogs today are overweight. This may stem from a living sedentary lifestyle, too much food, or being fed unhealthy meals. If you have a pooch that needs to lose weight, This Pork & Chicken recipe will help him do so without depriving him of a yummy meal and essential nutrition.

Overweight or inactive dogs need fewer calories and carbohydrates, while getting a higher protein content to boost weight loss. This recipe recognizes those facts by blending a specifically-designed food that balances the carb, protein, and calorie contents carefully.

The leaner formula begins with a protein-rich ingredient — pork meal. Pork is a highly digestible source of not only animal protein, but also of amino acids that are the building blocks of protein. These are crucial to almost all body functions including healing, repair, growth, and development.

Pork is also excellent for another reason. It’s not a protein source that many pets are exposed to, and it is much less likely to cause an allergic reaction than beef.

Complementing pork meal are two other types of meat — chicken meal and turkey meal. Together, these three boost up the protein content of this food to a satisfactory amount of 24% minimum.

If you’re in doubt about meals, don’t be. They come from fresh meat that have been rendered so that most of the moisture is cooked out (but not the nutrients!).

Meals that name the specific animal it comes from are fine ingredients to have in a dog food recipe. It’s the unnamed ones (for example meat meal) that you should stay away from.

There are several grains here to round out the formulation nicely. These are dehulled barley, brown rice, oatmeal, and rice. Since dogs are omnivores, there is no need to be concerned about grains in their diet. They can easily digest grains with no problem and will even benefit from having these included in their diet.

Many pet owners seem to believe that grain-free food automatically means better, but these don’t really have any edge over non-grain meals. In fact, unless your pooch is food sensitive or his veterinarian has prescribed a grain-free diet for a medical issue, your pet may even be missing out on nutrition with grain-free food.

Apart from the meat and the grains, this Eagle Pack formulation also contains peas, tomato pomace, brewers dried yeast. The peas provide additional protein and fiber; the tomato pomace contains a concentrated form of an antioxidant called lycopene; and brewers dried yeast is fortified with B vitamins and three types of omega fatty acids.

And let’s not forget the probiotics. There are lots of them here. The probiotics (friendly bacteria) play a very important role in the gastrointestinal system of dogs by keeping it healthy. They also fight off infections, remove toxins, and help your dog absorb nutrients.

This is a premium food that will help your dog shed pounds but give him ample nutrition to help him go about his day. There is 11% fewer calories in this formulation and 35% less fat when compared to other Eagle Pack dog food recipes.

While the special blend in this formulation will help your pooch lose pounds or maintain a healthy weight, it is also crafted to support a healthy muscle tone. Although designed to be leaner, your dog won’t get less nutrients than he should otherwise have. All in all, we do highly recommend this recipe.

5. Eagle Pack Power Chicken and Pork Formula

Rating: 5/5

First 5 ingredients: Chicken Meal, Pork Meal, Ground Brown Rice, Peas, Chicken Fat

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 12
A dry dog food that contains higher content of fats and protein to support the demanding needs of pooches who are highly active. It also contains probiotics for better gut health and glucosamine for healthy joints.

Highly active dogs need more support for their energy needs. You can’t get that from regular dog food, but you can from one that’s specifically designed for performance canines.

The Eagle Pack Power provides complete nutrition for dogs that are always on the move. The unique formulation helps these pooches maintain excellent muscle tone, stamina, and weight with its proper balance of fats, carbohydrates, and protein.

Because working dogs and active ones need lots of fuel, the first two ingredients for this recipe are animal proteins. Chicken meal and pork meal combine together to bring the crude protein content up to a high 30%. It also helps that peas are included, which provides nutrients too along with a high dose of plant protein.

There are only two types of grains here. Brown rice and dehulled barley. Both are packed with carbohydrates. Carbs, as you know, are one of a few sources of energy for dogs.

Critics of carbohydrates will say that canines do not need carbs because they are not nutritionally required by dogs, but that would only be partly true. Nutritional requirements are defined as components that need to be consumed through food because the body cannot manufacture them (or enough of them).

Going by the carb critics’ logic, dogs also don’t require vitamin C or proteins because they are also not considered as nutritional requirements or essential nutrition.

So anyway, back to the brown rice and barley. These two are good choices for grains. The brown rice contains more nutritional content than plain white because it retains the seed coat where nutrients are stored. Dehulled barley is low in cholesterol but high in fiber, a very good digestive aid for dogs because these maintain the health of the GI system.

Other notable ingredients in this recipe for performance dogs are chicken fat, brewers dried yeast, tomato pomace, and flaxseed. The rest are mostly made up of added minerals and vitamins to help dogs reach their daily requirements.

We’d like to commend the percentage of fat here (a component that canines primarily rely on for energy). It’s at a high 19%. Normally, this would be cause for concern but active dogs benefit a lot from higher proportions of fat in their food. Higher levels of fat conditions the metabolism of active canines even when they are resting.

As for the tomato pomace, you may be wondering what it is. It’s the skin and seeds that are left after the rest of the tomato are made into different products like ketchup and salsa. Tomato pomace is a common ingredient in dog foods because it provides a notable amount of soluble fiber.

Brewers dried yeast is loaded with amino acids that help dogs build blood, organs, bones, and more. Not only that, but brewers dried yeast is also full of B vitamins that may be helpful in reducing stress and anxiety in dogs.

Lastly, flaxseed plays an important role in the health of your pet’s skin and fur. It’s rich in Omega-6 and Omega-3 fatty acids that nourish the skin and coats of dogs and boost the immune system.

We find this recipe a highly functional one that does what it is supposed to do. And most pet parents who’ve reviewed it agree. Active dogs will find that this food provides the right energy level to keep canines as mobile as they need to be.

It not only helps with energy, but the unique Eagle Pack formulation can help keep hair soft, healthy, and shiny. It will also bulk up your dog (muscle) with its proper combination of nutrients without making him fat.

Considering the premium ingredients, the price, and the functionality, we give this recipe our highest rating for Eagle Pack Dog Food.

6. Turkey Formula Canned

 Rating: 3/5

First 5 ingredients: Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Liver, Ground Brown Rice, Flaxseed

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 13
A complete and balanced diet for furry companions of all life stages. Fortified with vitamins and minerals, this canned dog food is ideal to feed as a meal or in addition to a dry diet.

This canned recipe is described as a complete and balanced meal for all dogs, regardless of their life stage. This formula features healthy, wholesome ingredients in a recipe that is packed with natural flavor.

It is fortified with vitamins and minerals to ensure that your dog’s nutritional needs are met and it can be used as a complete meal or as a supplement to your dog’s kibble.

This recipe is a great example of Eagle Pack’s performance-driven nutrition that is uniquely designed to support your dog’s everyday health needs to give him a long happy life.

Best of all, this recipe is perfectly balanced in terms of protein, carbohydrates, and fats with additional benefits like antioxidant support and plenty of omega fatty acids.

The first ingredient in this canned turkey recipe is fresh turkey and it is followed by chicken broth. Turkey is an excellent source of meat-rich protein and, because it is animal-based, it offers great bio-availability for your dog.

It is also good to see a secondary source of animal protein in the form of chicken appearing third on the ingredients list. Because both of these are animal-based proteins, they are complete proteins – that means that they contain all of the essential amino acids your dog needs.

Your dog also gets some supplementary protein from the chicken liver and flaxseed, though the chicken liver is primarily included as a source of nutrients and the flaxseed serves mainly as a source of fat and supplemental fiber.

The main source of carbohydrate in this recipe is ground brown rice. Brown rice is a whole grain that is generally considered highly digestible for dogs. If your dog has food allergies or sensitivities to grains, however, this may not be a good ingredient.

If your dog isn’t bothered by these allergies or sensitivities, however, you have nothing to worry about. This recipe includes some supplementary sources of fiber such as flaxseed. The cassia gum and guar gum used in this formula act as thickeners, as does the carrageenan.

Unfortunately, carrageenan is considered a questionable ingredient by some because some evidence suggests that it may have a carcinogenic effect on dogs. The long-term effect of this ingredient, however, are unknown.

The remaining ingredients used in this canned recipe consist primarily of flavors and supplements. This recipe includes both synthetic vitamins and synthetic minerals, all of which offer limited bioavailability for dogs – natural sources for key nutrients are always more valuable (things like fresh fruits and vegetables).

It is good to see that some of the minerals are chelated, however. Chelated are mineral supplements that have been chemically bound to protein molecules which improves their bioavailability for dogs. This recipe could benefit from some dried fermentation products at the end of the list.

Overall, this wet food can be considered a high-quality source of balanced nutrition for dogs in all life stages. This recipe starts off strong with two fresh meats as the primary ingredients (and the main sources of protein).

Next comes a whole grain and a supplementary source of dietary fiber to support your dog’s healthy and regular digestion. You will also find that this recipe includes chelated minerals and other healthy supplements.

The main area in which this recipe could be improved is in the removal of carrageenan from the ingredients list and, perhaps, the addition of an animal-based fat. All in all, however, this recipe would be a great choice for any dog.

7. Beef Formula Canned

Rating: 3/5

First 5 ingredients: Beef, Ground Brown Rice, Oatmeal, Flaxseed, Olive Oil

Eagle Pack Dog Food Review: Nutrition In Action 14
This recipe gives dogs the rich and natural taste of beef using real meat and no artificial flavors or preservatives. Made with all natural, delicious quality ingredients, including premium protein from real beef.

Wet food tries to be as natural as can be with ingredients that are as close as possible to their original state. Eagle Pack’s Natural Dog Food Formula gives dogs the rich and natural taste of beef using real meat and no artificial flavors or preservatives.

Because this is wet food, it’s not as nutrient-dense as dry food is. However, wet food allows dogs to have more moisture in their diet (reducing the risk of diseases derived from dehydration), and it can be great for dogs who need to maintain or reduce their weight (because canned meals typically contain less calories).

As expected, the first few ingredients in this recipe are meat (with the exception of the 2nd, which is beef broth). Beef comes in first, followed by beef broth, chicken, and beef liver.

Beef is, of course, an excellent source of protein, along with zinc, iron, and plenty of B vitamins. The same goes for fresh chicken (third slot). Both of these contain essential amino acids, Omega fatty acids, and glucosamine.

There are two types of grains here: brown rice and barley. Brown rice is an easily digestible source of carbohydrates, B vitamins, and minerals. It’s even better than white rice, because although white rice is recommended for pups with gastrointestinal upsets, it also contains less nutrients.

Barley is also a digestible carb source that’s high in soluble and insoluble fiber yet low in cholesterol. It is a great ingredient that will complement any meat-based meal. Just make sure that your pooch is not allergic to gluten before feeding him this because barley has plenty of it.

You may wonder about the dried egg product in the formulation. It’s simply real egg that has been dehydrated to last a long time. So all the benefits that you expect from eggs, like protein, can be found in its dried up form.

While most of the rest of the ingredients (mostly vitamins, minerals, and some healthy inclusions such as flaxseed and alfalfa meal) are no concern for worry, there is one ingredient here that we’re not too happy about. It’s carrageenan.

Carrageenan is a food additive that manufacturers use to thicken and emulsify wet food. While food-grade carrageenan is claimed to be safe, once it reaches the acidic environment of the stomach, it may turn into “degraded carrageen” — a widely-recognized carcinogen, according to the scientists of Cornucopia Institute in its 2013 published report.

While most of the ingredients in this wet food recipe by Eagle Pack is of premium-quality, we will have to take exception to the inclusion of carrageenan.

The brand can do so much better than relying on an ingredient that may possibly cause gastrointestinal problems for pets. One example is tapioca. It can help gel substances beautifully without affecting the dog’s health.

Because of the use of carrageenan, what would otherwise be a perfect recipe for pooches receives a low rating from us. We give this recipe a 2 star (it would have been just one except that the other ingredients are just that good).

Manufacturing Details

The Eagle Pack brand of dog food was founded in 1970, originally under the name Hy-Ration. In 2000, the brand released its Holistic Select line of products and, in 2004, the company was purchased by Swander Pace Capital.

In 2007, Eagle Pack was sold to the Berwind Corporation, the company that oversees WellPet, LLC. WellPet, LLC is the same company that produces the Wellness brand of holistic pet foods.

Eagle Pack Recall History List

The Eagle Pack brand doesn’t broadcast the fact that their products are manufactured by Diamond Pet food because this company has been linked with a number of serious recalls in recent history.

Fortunately, there is only one recall that has affected the Taste of the Wild brand in particular and it happened several years ago in 2012. Here are the details for that recall:

In May 2012, the FDA issued a recall for all sizes of Taste of the Wild dry dog food and cat food products having production codes with a number 2 or 3 as the ninth digit and the letter X as the 10th or 11th digit as well as a “Best By” date between December 9, 2012 and April 7, 2013. This recall was issued due to potential salmonella contamination.

Price Comparison

The Eagle Pack brand of dog food is surprisingly affordable for a high-quality brand of pet food, though it does cost more than the typical kibble. You have to remember, however, that low-priced dog foods are often low-quality.

The price for a 30-pound bag of Eagle Pack dry dog food ranges from about $35 to $60, depending on the recipe. A smaller 15-pound bag of dry food will cost somewhere between $20 and $33, depending on which recipe it is.

Some recipes are even available in smaller 6-pound or larger 40-pound bags. When it comes to canned food, you can purchase 13.2-ounce cans of Eagle Pack wet dog food in cases of 12 for $25 to $35 which gives you an average price of around $2.50 per can.

Product List

The Eagle Pack company doesn’t offer s many products as some pet food brands, but all of the products they do offer are of the highest quality.

Eagle Pack offers two lines of dry dog food divided into puppy formulas and adult formulas with a single line of canned food options. Eagle Pack does not offer any dog treats or supplements.
