Behind the Brand
Blue Buffalo got its start in the early 2000s with the search for the right food for a specific dog, Blue. This wonderful companion became the namesake of the company, and now Blue Buffalo has an extensive line of holistic products from dog to cat foods and all the treats in between.
Blue struggled with cancer, and the family set out to find a food that wouldn’t harm their beloved pet’s health, but help alleviate some of the aches and pains happening with cancer treatments and the upset tummies as well. The food line evolved from a few natural, holistic ingredients with quality proteins to the lines you see today.
The Life Protection formula is one of Blue Buffalo’s most significant offerings. The Bishop family worked with leading veterinarians and nutritionists to develop the Life Protection line you see today. It features whole, quality proteins with a healthy balance of carbohydrates and with vitamins and minerals to promote health.
Supplements like essential fatty acids keep the skin and coat healthy while things like chondroitin and glucosamine keep joints healthy.
Blue maintains that it’s “food created by pet parents for pet parents” with quality ingredients meant to nurture your dog through all life stages. Life Protection is divided into these life stages with many different ingredients and size distinctions as well as some formulas to deal with specific issues like weight control.
Their dry foods also contain LifeSource bits a unique blend of vitamins and minerals intended to supplement good health.
Blue Buffalo is manufactured in the United States at facilities in several states owned by the company itself. It doesn’t source ingredients from China and uses only trusted sources for most ingredients.
Many are locally sourced, and all can be traced to the original source for transparency. The company was acquired by General Mills several years ago, which helped to increase distribution without sacrificing quality.

Recall History
Blue’s Life Protection line hasn’t been recalled very often, but the brand has had some smaller, notable recalls in the past. Life Protection formulas specifically were recalled back in 2016 in a limited capacity because of the danger of possible mold contamination.
The recall affected only 30-pound bag sizes specifically in the Fish and Sweet Potato recipes. The other methods were deemed safe, and this was a voluntary decision from the company itself.
What Others Say
Life Protection formulas typically have a good reputation with customers with many appreciating the affordability of the food without sacrificing quality. Now that Blue is owned by General Mills, it’s even easier to find in many online and brick and mortar stores.
Typical chewy.com reviews hover around 4.8 of 5 stars over more than 1500 reviews. On Amazon, similar reviews hover around 4 to 4.8 stars over 1000 or more reviews in multiple recipe categories. Overall, Blue has a solid reputation that comes directly from customers.
Proponents of Life Protection appreciate that the food has helped their dog’s health by reducing the number of cheap, low-quality ingredients, but that prices aren’t astronomical.
In fact, Blue Buffalo recipes are one of the best balances between budget and premium quality dog foods you can have. Detractors generally wanted to like Blue Buffalo but cite picky dogs and possibly some gas issues in not being satisfied with the recipe.
Positive
“My 1-1/2 old golden doodle was mostly disinterested in food and ate only when hungry. Her food would often sit in the bowl for hours. Because she has excited some regurgitation, I’ve tried several brands including prescription dry food for GI issues. This food was an immediate hit. SHe loves this for some reason and has cleaned her bowl time its offered. I’m amazed! Thank you!” Handtightened – chewy.com
Negative
“Our dog at first ate this dog food, but then later refused to eat ANY of the life source bits (where the nutrients are) and dropped the brown pellets everywhere. We spent every day picking them up/stepping on them-not fun at all. Blue Buffalo needs to blend nutrients into one morsel. Dogs are smart! Switched to Merrick and our dog eats all of it and doing very well.” SunnyJanet – chewy.com
