Meet Beaverdam Dog Food

Our quick take: Beaverdam is a small, family-owned Delaware brand with four dry recipes built on pork meal and chicken: Skipper’s Choice 21/12, Hi-Protein 27/12, Hi-Energy 26/18 and the grain-free Eli’s Select 33/16. The three grain-inclusive recipes use millet, sorghum and brown rice instead of corn, wheat or soy, and the prices are lower than most brands with similar ingredients. Hi-Energy 26/18 is the pick for puppies and working dogs; Skipper’s Choice suits less active adults. We found no Beaverdam recalls (checked October 2026). It is sold mainly through farm, feed and hardware stores, so check Beaverdam’s store locator before you go.

Behind the Brand

The story of Beaverdam starts with a man named Truman Schrock from rural Delaware. He grew up on a farm where hard work and family were the most important values a man could have.

In 1961 he married and purchased Beaverdam Farm where they grew corn, wheat, and soybeans.

In 1970 Truman began working at the Furst Mcness Company in animal nutrition, feeds, and supplements. During those years he learned a lot about the pet food industry and realized that a lot of pet parents have no idea what they are feeding their dogs and how they could be hurting their pets.

After his retirement in 2003, Truman started Beaverdam Pet Food where his primary focus was high-quality ingredients at a low cost.

Today the company is standing strong and now offering four different lines of dog food. Truman says he has no desire to grow to the largest company around and he likes that his “small town” business strategy makes him different from the rest.

A premium, gluten free dry food which is made from pork and chicken. This formula easily meets the unique demands of small breeds, puppies and very active dogs, plus it also has a precise blend of minerals and antioxidants.

Beaverdam Hi-Energy 26/18’s name refers to the 26% protein to 18% fat content. It’s a special formula that’s designed specifically for working dogs, small breeds, and growing puppies as these categories of dogs need a bountiful supply of energy to draw on.

WHY YOU SHOULD BUY
Beaverdam Dog Food Reviews: Premium Nutrition or Just Hype? 12
Comprised of 2 protein sources: pork and chicken. This high quality, grain and gluten free formula is fortified with antioxidants, minerals, vitamins and healthy fats to support your dog’s body inside out.

Formulated with a ratio of 33% protein and 16% fat, Beaverdam Eli’s Select 33/16’s focus is the development and maintenance of healthy muscles. This signature blend is recommended for canines with moderate levels of activity. It also meets the AAFCO Dog Food Nutrient Profiles of lactating, gestating, and growing dogs as well as for adult maintenance.

This recipe makes use of two types of animal protein — chicken and pork in meal forms — to bring the protein content to a high 33%. Chicken fat provides the main fat source, while ground peas and pea starch supply most of the carbohydrates. Because it is grain-free and pea-heavy, note that the FDA looked into a possible link between diets like this and heart disease (DCM) and in 2022 said it had not found a proven cause; ask your vet if your dog’s breed is prone to heart problems.

Benefits:

  • Gluten-free and grain-free
  • High protein content courtesy of two types of meat protein
  • Guaranteed levels of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids
  • Has probiotics and prebiotics
  • No artificial colors, preservatives, or flavor

The meal starts off with a high-quality ingredient in the form of chicken meal. Dog foods are ideally meat-based, and unless the food is specially crafted to meet a specific need, it’s always recommended to look for one that begins with an animal protein.

Further down the list, this recipe includes a good helping of fruits and veggies, such as carrots, zucchinis, papaya, and blueberry. While Beaverdam’s supplemental nutrition is important, natural occurring vitamins and minerals from the inclusion of greens and fruits are very welcome.

Nutritional Breakdown:

Crude Protein 33%
Crude Fat 16%
Crude Fiber 3.8%

Many customers from Chewy have given this product a 4.5 score out of 5 stars and a rating of 91% recommended. The dog food is popular mainly for its use of local, high-quality ingredients and its affordable price.

Each of the ingredients have been carefully chosen to provide as much flavor as possible. The nutrition isn’t lagging either, because there’s a good amount of fiber and protein in the mixture. There are no fillers in the list.

Nutritional Breakdown:

Crude Protein 10.5%
Crude Fat 29.5%
Crude Fiber 2%

This peanut-ty dog treat has garnered a 100% recommended rating and 4.7 out of 5 stars score. Pet owners who have bought the treats love the delicious smell, limited ingredients, and the fact that these don’t bother the tummies of sensitive pups.

Be a little careful about feeding more than the recommended number of treats to your pets, however. There’s a lot of calories here at 488.25 calories per 100 grams of treat. A couple or so won’t hurt when given occasionally, but more than that might result in your pup gaining more weight than necessary.

What Types of Dog Food Does Beaverdam Offer?

Beaverdam offers a limited amount of foods, but the company says that is what allows them to maximize their ingredients and make sure that every bag contains the best of the best. Each food from this company caters to a specific dietary need for dogs.

Beaverdam Dog Food

Below are the four offerings from Beaverdam with a brief explanation of each.

Skipper’s Choice 21/12

Containing two sources of protein (chicken and pork) this food is an excellent dietary balance for active adult dogs. The 21/12 refers to the ratio of protein versus fat, and this line contains real meat as the first ingredient.

Hi-Protein 27/12

Judging by the name you most likely get the intention behind this line. This food packs more protein into each bite, so it’s intended for highly active dogs who have a hard time holding weight. The food also contains prebiotics, probiotics, chicory, and yucca for digestion and immunity.

Hi-Energy 26/18

The high energy blend contains a higher fat content as well as protein for active and working dogs. The food contains gluten-free ingredients with protein from chicken and pork. All foods from Beaverdam including this one contains no corn, wheat, soy, dyes, colors, or artificial preservatives.

Eli’s Select Grain-Free 33/16

This food is intended for pups who have sensitivities to grain. The blend has chicken and pork for healthy muscles alongside omega-3 and six fatty acids for skin and coat health. Eli’s Select is the newest offering from the company and got its name from the owner’s father.

Customer Reviews

The best way to decide if the dog food is right for your pup is to read reviews from customers who already took the leap and purchased the brand. Overall this brand has an excellent reputation with all of their food lines receiving four stars or more on Chewy.

Many reviewers state that the food helped their pup maintain their weight and the transition between foods was easy because they enjoy the flavor.

Here are some honest reviews from real customers.

Positive

No trouble transitioning

  • Two big dogs (golden and golden/collie) were on another kibble, and love this so far. No trouble with digestibility or taste. Love the small bites. Pretty plain packaging but who cares about that! It’s been a couple of weeks, so I can’t attest to fur, but all in all, extremely pleased, as is my budget! – Chewy Customer

My Collie is a new dog!

  • Collies are notorious for having issues with skin and allergies. I could not find anything at all to help him with his skin, and he suffered terribly. I started giving him Beaver Dam food when I thought it first cam out about ten years ago…Laddie, has the most beautiful coat, no problems with allergies and he loves it. I wish it were around for my previous collie who suffered for 13 years because we had nothing to give her that would help her sensitive skin…Thank You, Beaverdam! We will be customers for life! – Chewy Customer

Great Product for the money

  • Beaverdam is a quality brand dog food that doesn’t believe in spending high dollars on pretty packaging to make you want to buy it. Instead, they have a good bag that protects food and keeps it fresher. It would be nice to be resealable, but I get around that by buying a container to pour it in once opened. My dogs thrive on it, and since there are no fillers, they digest it more, making me not feed as much to save money that way also. Their coats are healthier looking and no allergy issues. Highly recommend it, been using it for over five years – Chewy Customer
Beaverdam Dog Food Reviews: Premium Nutrition or Just Hype? 16

Negative

Ok, but not good enough.

  • I was disappointed a bit with this food. I have a Cane and Puggle, and both ended up losing weight, Cane dropped to 145ish from around 160. They both like the taste and ate it well; it just didn’t maintain their weight. I usually combine two tastes and had this combined with the hi-protein one from Beaverdam so that could have been something, though neither were any more active than before. – Chewy Customer

Beaverdam Dog Food: High Quality Ingredients At An Most Affordable Price

If you’ve made it this far through the review, you most likely see that Beaverdam is an excellent dog food that received one of our highest possible ratings. The food contains some of the best ingredients and dogs seem to love the flavor.

The main thing that a lot of other dog foods of the same quality cannot beat is the price. Beaverdam usually costs noticeably less than brands with similar named-meat-meal, no-corn recipes, which is why it has a loyal following.

If you are considering switching from your current dog food to one that is healthier, reputable, and more affordable; we recommend giving Beaverdam a try.
