On March 17, 2020 the WellPet Company issued a voluntary recall for one of their canned topper products, Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs. The recall was issued due to potentially elevated levels of naturally occurring beef thyroid hormone. No other Wellness products are affected by this recall.

The WellPet Company produces and manufactures several different brands of pet food including Wellness, Holistic Select, Old Mother Hubbard, Eagle Pack, and Sojos. The Wellness pet food brand offers healthy, natural pet foods made with carefully selected ingredients, including lean meats, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. They offer several different beef-based dog food products, including the recalled recipe. No other Wellness products are affected by this recall.

Though WellPet has not received any reports of illness or injury related to the recalled product, the FDA received complaints of three dogs who were affected. Immediately upon receiving word of these complaints, WellPet initiated an investigation which led to the voluntary recall of their Wellness 95% Beef Topper for Dogs in 13.2-ounce cans with three best by dates – 2/2/19, 8/29/17, and 8/30/17. The three dogs are now fully recovered and have not displayed any lasting negative effects.

There are small amounts of beef thyroid hormone that occur naturally in beef, but elevated levels of this hormone can lead to negative side effects in dogs. These side effects may include increased urination and thirst, restlessness, unexplained weight loss, and restlessness. With continued consumption, these symptoms could potentially get worse or the dog could develop new symptoms including difficulty breathing, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your dog displays any of these symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Because the product affected by the recall is a mixer or topper and not intended for staple feeding, it is unlikely to cause a problem with occasional use. However, WellPet recommends that any consumers who have cans of the recalled product discontinue use immediately and either dispose of the product safely or return it to their place of purchase for a full refund. If you have further questions, feel free to contact WellPet by calling 1-877-227-9587 or email them at WeCare@wellpet.com.

The WellPet CEO has issued a letter in which he states, “Please know that safeguarding the health and wellbeing of pets is of the utmost importance” to the company. Furthermore, as part of their commitment to ensuring the quality and safety of their products, they are removing the product from circulation as a precautionary measure.
