On March 17, 2017 the Blue Buffalo Company voluntarily issued a recall for one lot of their BLUE Wilderness Rocky Mountain Recipe Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs. This recall was issued due to potentially elevated levels of naturally-occurring beef thyroid hormones.

To date, Blue Buffalo has not directly received any complaints or reports of injury or illness related to the affected product, but the FDA has received a report of symptoms in one dog.

Beef thyroid hormones occur naturally and may be found in other Blue Buffalo Company beef-based products. However, the only product affected by the recall is one lot of BLUE Wilderness Rocky Mountain Recipe Red Meat Dinner Wet Food for Adult Dogs with the UPC code 840243101153 with a best by date of June 7, 2017.

Immediately upon receiving word of the customer complaint issued to the FDA, Blue Buffalo began an investigation and, in working with the FDA, voluntarily decided to recall the product.

Ingesting low levels of naturally-occurring beef thyroid hormone is unlikely to cause negative effects, but high levels of this hormone might cause the dog to develop symptoms including increased thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight loss, increased heart rate, and restlessness.

After use of the recalled product is discontinued, symptoms may resolve naturally. With continued consumption, however, symptoms may increase in severity and could also progress to include additional symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, and difficulty breathing.

The product affected by this recall was sold online and in pet specialty stores around the nation. No other Blue Buffalo products have been impacted by this recall and, as of yet, only one complaint has been made to the FDA – this dog has since fully recovered.

If you have been feeding your dog this product, discontinue use immediately. You can return the product to the place of purchase for a full refund or dispose of it safely.
