A PetSmart recall occurred last February 8, 2020 of one production lot of its Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food sold on PetSmart.com, Pet360.com, PetFoodDirect.com and in nationwide PetSmart retail stores.
This product is being voluntarily recalled as a precautionary measure due to metal contamination that could potentially be a choking hazard to pets according to a notice on the PetSmart web site.
“Metal contamination” is a little vague but we assume this means metal fragments in the food since it refers to a choking hazard.
This recall was initiated after receiving notification from the manufacturer of consumer complaints. PetSmart says that it has not received any consumer complaints about the food at this time.

According to various sources, Grreat Choice canned foods are made for PetSmart by Simmons Global Pet Food, possibly in Arkansas, though other facilities may also make the food. Simmons was founded in the late 1950s/early 1960s (depending on the source).
The company has three wet pet food production facilities, a dry pet food facility, and a treats production facility in the U.S. and Canada. Simmons acquired Menu Foods in 2010. They manufacture many brands of foods, especially canned foods, for other pet food companies and generally have a good reputation.
The recalled products include the following Grreat Choice dog food sold between October 10, 2016 and February 7, 2020:
Product Name | UPC | Best By Date or Lot Code |
Grreat Choice Adult Dog Food with Chicken & Rice Classic Ground, 13.2 oz. cans | 7-3725726116-7 | Best By 8/5/19 Lot 1759338 |
The Best By date can be found on the bottom of the can.
No other Grreat Choice products are impacted by this issue. PetSmart says that it is not aware of any reported cases of illness or injury related to this product at this time.
If you purchased the recalled food you should stop feeding it to your dog immediately. Return any remaining cans to your local PetSmart store for full refund or exchange.
